What was your first Star Trek book?

Mine was in 1999 and I got four books together: All Good Things, First Contact, Caretaker, Dominion War Book 1. Don't know why but I felt back then I should only read novelisations of episodes (and I thought the last book was connected to DS9 series). Thankfully I quickly realised the error of my ways and discovered the vast number of great Star Trek novels.

My first Star Trek novel was Spock's World by Diane Duane, in about 1995 or thereabouts. The first one I read all the way through was either Worf's First Adventure or Vendetta by Peter David, around the same time.

My first star trek novel was the novelization of “The first contact” in German back in 1996. I never was much of a reader before I picked up that novel my chance, but since then I was reading 334 star trek novels, first in my native language and then the originals. My peak in-put at reading was in 2009 with no less than 109 novels. So this pick-up by chance was such a shatter-point that changed my life forever. I can’t imagine my life without books now and the wonderful, fantastic journeys I undertake in the realm of my imagination. Thank you J.M. Dillard for opening my eyes…

The first one I can remember is Star Trek 10, one of the later James Blish episode adaptations back in the seventies. My mother bought it for me at the train station after a trip to London.

No videos or DVDs in those days. I still have the book somewhere, great greenish-tinged cover artwork depicting the Enterprise and Klingon D7.

Been awhile, so I can't be too certain. But, it was probably one of the James Blish TOS novelizations, or The Making of Star Trek.

I can pretty well recall in 6th grade seeing a copy of Vendetta at the local library. I'm I'm not mistaken, my reactions were something along the lines of (in no particular order):

"Wow...they make Star Trek Books?!?!?"

"Wow...more Borg. I must have this."

"I'm pretty sure I'm gonna be the coolest one in my class. While everyone is just reading books, check out my GIANT NOVEL!"

It was all downhill from there...

I also remember devouring David Gerrold's non-fiction books on Star Trek back in junior high.

Yes! I read and re-read The Trouble With Tribbles and The World of Star Trek many times in the '70s. Lots of great behind-the-scenes stories, details of creating scripts, and analysis of the Star Trek phenomenon. I especially loved Tim Kirk's illustrations in TTWT. Very funny!

DS9 #22, "Vengeance" by Dafydd ab Hugh. Picked it up at Wal-Mart, way back when DS9 was on-air and Trek books actually SOLD at Wal-Mart. I re-read that book so many times...

Mine was Heart of the Sun. I'd had no real exposure to Star Trek at that time and so had trouble visualizing all the usual elements. In my mind Scotty was this eccentric Albert Einstein-looking character. Luckily for me Spock and Kirk were on the cover or I'd have probably cast them bizarrely too.

Chain of Attack by Gene Deweese. It was the first Star trek novel and second adult novel that I read.

That's often quoted as someone's introduction to TrekLit. First new title after ST IV's premiere, riding the crest of publicity generated by the popularity of that movie. IIRC, this was also when the original Pocket novels had significantly enlarged the words "Star Trek" on the cover and used the familiar TOS font.

Yeah -- before then, it had just been the title with "The new STAR TREK novel" above it, with an optional superlative adjective before the "new." Chain of Attack was the first Trek novel (other than novelizations) to have an actual ST logo as part of the title.

I'm pretty sure it was Motion Picture novelisation, then the Blish TOS adaptions - I remember finding a brand new set in a bargain bookshop in Dudley.

My first Trek novel was TNG's Imzadi. I read it the summer before my first year of middle school (sixth grade)! It seems like ages ago, but I haven't stopped reading Treklit since!

Double Double was my first TOS and my second Trek novel. Mosaic was my first VOY. I can't remember my first of the others off hand, but I lucked out on my first two novels being some of the best!
