What was your first car.

My first actual car was a 1984 Ford Tempo. It looked almost exactly like this one, just with fuzzy dice in the mirror:

Mine was silver.

I really appreciated the added safety measure, where if the breaks ever went out, all I had to do was crank up the A/C and the car would slow right the fuck down.

A/C? What's that? If you turned on the A/C in my car, you got shot with dirt.

Still, I have to agree, lots of safety features on the ol' Tempos. Why, sometimes my car wouldn't even start if it felt I wasn't safe, and would leave me sitting in 12 degree weather until it felt I was. :ouch:

I remember driving over some railroad tracks one night, and out of nowhere the car just shut down. I mean, everything quit. I coasted to a stop and had to wait a few minutes until the car started up again. Also, whenever I would drive above 40, the keys in the ignition would start rattling, the whole vehicle would start shaking violently (think Excelsior in ST:VI) and the radio would come on by itself. That said, I loved that car so much. I had nicknamed it the Funkmobile, and it served me well. :adore:

Mine was "The Hillmobile," thus dubbed by all my college friends who needed rides.

You needed keys for your Tempo? Towards the end of her life my Tempo could be started just by turning the ignition slot with your hand!

Ooh, fancy! :D

The Hillmobile. That's awesome because it even rhymes. :D
Too many people thought I was swearing when they heard me say my car's nickname.

Well, to be fair, if one sees a driver at the wheel of a Ford Tempo, one expects the driver to be swearing from time to time.

My 1st car was a 1978 Oldsmobile Delta 88. 350ci with a 4bbl carb. The image below is similar to the Olds. My car was maroon, but you get the idea.

My 1st car I bought with my own money was a 1990 Dodge Daytona ES. 3.0L V6. The image below has the same color scheme and wheels that my car had.

Having 'Vader' do the voice over is awesome.

Had the digital dash as well, it was annoying at times. Got rid of it after 4-5 years, by then it had a few issues. But I did get the what I paid for it on the trade in, so that was a plus. And it didn't sit right after I jumped it going over a train track at around 80-90.

I picked 'Ford'. Wasn't an American one, though, but an English Ford (in the back of my) Cortina, vintage 1966.

Edit:

...

I wanted to post the scene from Smoke Signals where they're driving in reverse, but I couldn't find it on YouTube.

I love that movie! And would highly recommend The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, upon which it's based. As well as any of Sherman Alexie's other books!

Here's the scene, thought the quality sucks:

Still haven't got around to watching that movie all the way through, but Elaine Miles is awesome. :techman:

I guess I feel like a spoiled kid, because my Dad bought me a brand new 1997 Toyota Corolla CE when I turned 16. It was at the end of the summer, and at the end of the model year, so he got a good deal on it. It had everything I needed - auto transmission, A/C, radio, power windows and door locks. However, it oddly was missing a few things (like, for instance, a clock?!).

Kept the car for a little over three years, then traded it in and I bought myself a 2001 Corolla LE which was much better equipped (A clock! A CD player! Power side mirrors! Cruise Control!). I made the payments on this car myself.

My first set of wheels was a 1989 Toyota MR2, with T-tops and (of course) a manual transmission.

Dang, that car was fun as he!! to drive. Just had to remember not to buy a lot of stuff while you were out and about (grocery store, etc.)... as you might end up having to make two trips. :p

Cheers,

An 86 Opel Kadett with a diesel engine

Got ripped off when we bought it at a dealer.. i was 18 so what did i know and my dad didn't negotiate a bit.

That thing was loud as hell.. at max speed of around 165 km/h you could forget about any conversation but it was a sturdy car that served me well (and i never dinged it for which i was a bit proud as a new driver.. the dinging and accidents came later with newer cars )

Sold it to a neighbor when i started university for a good price because i thought i couldn't support a car once i had appartment and costs of living to pay.. a mistake it turns out since i found a good job whily studying but you can't know such things in advance.

My first car is the one I'm currently driving, a Saturn L - 2000 Model. It's been a good car.

I put this story in my novel (one of a few bits of the book that were drawn from real life).

Is that one you're writing or one you've already finished?

I've never owned a car, but the first car I remember my parents owning was a very bright yellow Ford Escort (not sure which build year, but it mist have been a "Mark III") exactly like this toy car I found through google image search (with the sun roof even!):

eta: I think "mine" had four doors though, but I wouldn't swear on it.

1981 ford escort mk3 ghia is a 4 door ford escort. Most of the models like the picture were two door.

The one I finished. I sat down and knocked that fucker out from beginning to end, all 400 pages, in 3 1/2 weeks! Now it's a matter of finding a publisher. My first rejection letter said the appeal isn't "general" enough...but I suppose that's to be expected when one writes a coming-of-age/fantasy/mystery/crime novel about race relations, poverty, addiction, and mental illness!
