What was the point of Burhnam being raised by Sarek?

In what way specifically?
Because someone wrote this article months before the show aired and apparently some people don't know the difference between a "Mary Sue" and "possible excuse to create a Mary Sue". In reality she turned out to be far from it, and in many ways the very opposite. It makes as much sense as calling her a pacifist because Vulcan teachings tend to support that. The actual story determined both of these assumptions very false.

And if Burnham had turned up as "some other Vulcan's daughter", we would have heard from other fans wondering, "why couldn't she have been Sarek's daughter? Yeah, at least we know who he is. It's supposed to be a prequel, isn't it?".

They handled this aspect of DSC exactly the way they should have, without regard for what the fans would say.

"Lethe" makes it clear why it has to be Sarek. He married a human (because of love... um logic). He had a half-human son. He had a close relationship with humanity. He wanted other Vulcans to see humans as equals. It makes sense why Sarek now.

Having the character be related to main cast members is one trope of being Mary Sue.

Whatever one wishes to call it, the relationship with Sarek/Spock serves no purpose. Fans don't need the callback to the main series and they will watch the show regardless and non-fans and casual viewers will have no idea who Sarek is and why she is related. The plot point serves no purpose and should have been removed. If, for some reason they really wanted to make her raised by Vulcans it could have been any random Vulcan - and a great way to introduce a new character.

lol, okay. Whatever one wishes to call it, the button at the bottom of the captain chair's left arm serves no purpose. Therefore, it was a deus ex machina!

If Burnham were a Mary Sue, then no one would be saying her relationship with Sarek and Spock serves no purpose. The purpose would obviously be so that she could be a Mary Sue. But we're 7 episodes in, and still no Mary Sue. Meanwhile, the relationship has served the purpose of adding to the character development of both Sarek and Burnham.

Star Trek Discovery serves no purpose and should be removed. Fans don't need a spinoff of the main series and casual viewers have no idea what Star Trek is.
