What was good/bad for Trek, good for Star Wars?

I saw the trailer for Beyond. I liked how it opened with music and it got my attention right away. I enjoyed the character interplay and the special effects. Until this point, I didn't know that Paramount was committing itself to more NuTrek. BUT even more worrisome is that it's not only Abrams producing but a Fast and Furious director directing. Fast and Furious is a fun action technology thriller but at times you need to turn off the "physics check" in your brain to make the stunts work. (Take FF7 scene when Vin dives out of the car to save his GF. The ballistics arcs don't match with what he did.)

So I'm worried that adding Justin Lin takes us even further in a direction that will turn Trek into a "feel good" science fiction for the scientifically illiterate. I'm happy to be wrong and that they won't let "what looks cool" trump "what's technically feasible." Otherwise we'll just end up with Pirates of the Caribbean and we won't even get the charms of Johnny Depp.

So I put together an [link removed] about what Abrams has done with Trek and ask the question of "what he'll do for Star Wars?" It finishes with a poll to see if Star Wars will be better served by the Abrams/Disney combo or not.

Trek has never put science before story.

If it did it would take a looooooooooooong time to get to Vulcan.

Frankly, I think you have to turn off the "physics check" in your brain for just about everything in the Trek universe to work the way it is depicted.

Maybe there is a parallel universe where science comes before story in Trek. Somehow some people are slipping through to our universe?

The Star Trek Purity Test is the stupidest thing I've seen in a long time.

Also what does "scientific illiterate" even mean? One not need know anything about science to know Star Trek. In fact, I'd argue the opposite is true--which is kind of the whole point.

More importantly, everything Star Trek has ever done technology wise is more likely to wind up on a test at Hogwarts than, say, MIT.

"It's been a long road, getting from there to here..."

Yeah I don't see it. I don't think there's anything to worry about science wise because...well it never existed. Star Trek does idolize science to a greater degree, not unlike the pulp sci-fi that came before it and was contemporary with it, but it was never concerned with being super accurate on science.

And if a scientific impossibility was encountered then a device would be invented that would get around it.

Indeed. There's really nothing to worry about with Star Trek becoming "scientifically illiterate" because the show was always made for the scientifically illiterate.

If this thread had exclusively concerned itself with the upcoming Star Trek Beyond, I think it would be workable here.

But it's also about the physics of the "Fast & Furious" franchise, as well as "what's good for Star Wars" and "feel-good science fiction for the scientifically illiterate" and even a little bit of "Pirates of the Caribbean," which makes it an unfocused topic and probably not well-suited for this forum. It wants to belong too many places at the same time, and isn't really tailored to any of them.

I'm going to recommend that this thread make up its mind about its intended topic of discussion, and then repost itself in the forum most appropriate to that topic.

Closing for now.
