What the hell happened to Kes?

First of all, those pictures are old. As for Lien, she's been a bit up and down in her weight the recent years. A few years ago she was very thin, now she seem to have gained some weight again (but not as much as the 2001 pictures).

Second, she's not the only one who have gained some weight which we can see here: http://creationent.com/past_events/stlv2008/adds/VoyagerCast.JPG

Third, it looks like we have a lot of new posters who are presenting themselves by coming up with nasty attacks against Kes/Lien and that really makes me wonder who those "newbies" are and if it is some sort of "campaign" going.

wtf!!! Its like as soon as Voy was over they all really let it out. Even tim russ. Is that photoshopped?

Not what I know. I saw it on another forum and I don't think it was put there to point out any weight problems, only to show some convention participants.

The Jeffersons.

And "Good Times" or whatever the show with Jimmie "Dy-no-MITE!" Walker was.

I guess the stereotype is reversed in black family sitcoms...?

Good point. The big black scary woman is a stereotype in black-oriented sitcoms, but there are more where the female lead is generally slender, like 227 (Marla Gibbs), Half & Half (Rachel True, Essence Atkins), My Wife & Kids (Tisha Campbell-Martin), etc. I still maintain that fat guy/slim gal is the usual dynamic in sitcoms. -- RR

She does not look enormous. That is a gross exageration. Yes, she has gained weight. So? Does it matter? Maybe she has had problems, maybe she just didn't care, maybe it's medical. People gain and lose weight througout their lives. No reason to devote a thread to it, especially not with such an opening post.

Agreed, why do people care so much if a former trek actor gains weight, it happens. Everyone gains and loses weight. Just like loupjo said there is any reason for her weight gain there is no reason to devote a thread to this issue.

Well, to answer the question, you might start by asking yourself why you replied to a thread about a former Trek actor gaining weight. Clearly, it's an issue that generates strong emotions from a lot of people. Why pretend like you don't care about the topic when it's obvious that you do?

It not that I don't care about the topic, it brings up bad memories of my childhood. I admit I was a fat kid who got inshape. If let's say to using trek actors as perhaps to a discuss on the health concerns of weight gain that is one thing but to just have a thread because of an actor or actress gaining weight without knowing the situation behind it; or the fact holy crap he or she gain weight is a bit unnecessary or mean spirited. That's all I'm not saying the creator of the thread doesn't have the right to make it, and not to say that it was meant to be mean spirited

Well, she definitely looks larger/different from her Voyager days ...
But at the same time, it's not a shocker really and just part of life (it merely takes a bit to adjust to the new look).

It certainly isn't the Trek way to judge someone on thier appearance, certainly when it is so superficial to one's self, so to speak - but - you would certainly have to be deluded not to notice a severe change for the worse (generally speaking). Frankly, she has been eating too many pies! She should cut down, it's bad for her health and her appearance. If she really doesn't care, then fine - but she should. It is clear that she is overweight and judging someone for that is the same as judging someone for smoking which is certainly something people here wouldn't be afraid to pass judgement on. Both involve excess and addition and both have negative consequences from which you should seek help.

Except that weight gain can be due to multiple factors: the administration of antidepressants or other drugs (I'm not implying that the actress in question is on them, only pointing out that medication-induced weight gain is an issue for some people), smoking cessation, injury leading to difficulty with exercise, or other factors aside from "eating too many pies" can cause weight gain. Also, genetic factors play a part in weight gain.

Yes, a healthful lifestyle should be strongly encouraged, but it's cruel to judge her for the weight gain without any knowledge of the circumstances under which she gained the weight. Anyone who's gained that much weight knows they're fat; do you really think that judging her is going to make a difference? You can't force anyone to lose weight, just like you can't force anyone to stop smoking. It has to be that person's choice, and I fail to see what the "ZOMG!She's fat" discussion has to contribute.

The main difference between smoking and eating pies: Pie, in moderation, is yummy, and will not hurt. Smoking, in moderation, is still stupid and will kill you/give you COPD/cancer/a host of debilitating issues.

...and, y'know, Star Trek could cast some women with a dress size larger than a 4. Maybe then we wouldn't be so surprised when they gain a couple pounds (or even a couple dozen, as the case may be.)

This sounds a little harsher than I intended, but my point is basically: what does judging accomplish? And what does singling out one person to point out "the health risks of obesity" going to do? Obesity is bad; you don't need to single out a single actress/actor for a poster child.

I could care less how Lien looks today, since she's not really working in entertainment at all anymore. Probably because while she was adorably cute on VOY, she pretty much couldn't act at all.

Still, I wish her the best and think it's a shame so many people criticize her all the time, given that her serious acting career ended a long time ago. Leave the poor woman alone.

Thank God the show didn´t run for 14 seasons;)

Fury 2: The Hunger

Kes comes back and eats the ship's food supply. Chakotay is ordered to clean up the mess she leaves.

LOL!

When I saw her recent pics, my response was literally "Holy shit! She looks like she ate half the crew and had the starboard nacelle for desert!"

By the way, even THIN folks have issues with their body images. I remember when I used to. Might give some more insight or compassion on general body image when it comes to everyone, not just fat folks. :techman:

I totally agree with your statement about people criticizing her. She's not the only ex-Star trek actor who have gained weight.

But I find the statement about her acting skills wrong. She was a great actress who really gave life to the character Kes and she was brilliant when she was allowed to be under te strongest spotlight in some episodes.

The fact that she's no longer acting is a loss for the world of movies, TV series and entertainment.

I thought she did a perfectly fine job as Kes when I was still watching VOY. I never had a complaint with her acting, and I actually thought she looked too thin. Remember that the camera adds pounds. Several Trek actors from several of the series have complained that the material used for the uniforms was extremely unforgiving, that even the slightest bulge was accentuated and highlighted, so they had to resort to pretty extreme calorie restriction to maintain a good fit.

It isn't uncommon at all for actors to back off of diets or fitness regimens when not actively involved in a project. Maintaining physical perfection, or as close to it as one can get, is stressful on the body and the mind after a while, and extreme calorie restriction can have severe long-term health detriments including kidney failure, heart disease, and dementia. Even athletes in off seasons pack on extra pounds. If she's happy with herself, comfortable with her size, and healthy, then I say more power to her.

This thread... springing back like a bad weed.

Lien was thin. Then she got fat. I guess it's pretty amazing when you think about it. After all, that's never happened in all of Hollywood, right?

This topic, plus Kes doing a bunch of acid and mushrooms should be pinned to the Voyager forum for easy access.

/flippant rant

On Facebook, I find it terrifying that so many people I knew in school are now as plump as cows. I'm steadily achieving that goal myself. I don't want to rush into things, though. Slow and steady wins the race.

There's already a current thread dealing with body size in Trek. No need to resurrect a seven-plus month old discussion.
