What the heck is the Xenomorph doing at the end of "Alien?"

But an easy retcon. The xenomorph in Alien was a queen, it just had grown into the huge thing we saw in Aliens yet. And the idea that iot was hiding also makes perfect sense. Why would it crawl in there to die instead of just collapsing on the floor?
Natural instinct? She doesn't know when a Predator :klingon: looking for a trophy would show up.

It was supposed to be dying, it was approaching the end of its lifecycle (it grew to adulthood so fast, makes sense it would die that fast as well).

The problem with that being that all Ripley had to do was... go to hypersleep like she planned, and it'd be dead by the time she woke up. Not very dramatic.

Actually, it's rather ironic because the whole thing from that point on was Ripley's fault. If she'd left it alone she'd have been safe.

I had never heard the notion before from Ridley Scott that it was dying. It seemed perfectly happy in the corridor bashing Jones around beforehand.

I think it was simply following it's instincts. It liked to hide in the vent shafts, and before that the landing gear. When it found the shuttle it had a new place to hide. Ripley left the door open so once the Alien spotted it it just ran for the opening and found a nice cosy place to hide.

The intelligence of the Alien is questionable; whether it knew the ship was doomed and tried to escape like a rat desrting a sinking ship is unknown - then again the damn things managed to find a way to cut the power in Aliens, so...

That part doesn't bother me. The part that bothers me is that Ripley finds it hiding in the bulkhead, looks right at it, runs around the room, makes a ton of noise...and the alien doesn't even move!

Well it probably figured all Ripley could really do was annoy it with fire, and that she would be smart enough not to try.

Kind of like a lion who lays out in the open, secure in the knowledge that most other animals aren't going to be stupid enough to mess with him.

I always thought that the Alien was aware of Ripley in that confined space and didn't see her as a threat, so it took it's own sweet time in moving in for the kill. Sort of how a cat plays with a mouse. It had grown overconfident in dealing so easily with the other humans, this overconfidence leading directly to it's undoing.

^ Overconfidence aside, if you'd been woken up my a cold jet of CO2 in your face you'd be pretty pissed off!

Why do a lot of animals do the same thing? If they're hurt or dying, a lot of animals will find themselves a nice, cozy spot to curl up in to safely wait for the end. Another thing to be written off as the alien's "animal instincts" perhaps?

Ripley wouldn't have necesarily had to know that it was dying, which would make her response pretty reasonable.

Yeah, Scott said that it was dying. He didn't say that it posed no threat or that Ripley should have known that it posed no threat.

The thing's job was to grow up, breed and die. Common life cycle.

I just decided to watch "Alien" as part of my lazy Labor Day celebration, and I have a question that has been bugging me ever since I saw this movie for the first time as a kid.

What the hell is the Xenomorph doing at the end of the movie when Ripley finds it in the shuttle? Was it injured? Was it taking a nap? Did it climb into the bulkhead and get stuck? It just lays there while Ripley runs into the closet and puts on a spacesuit.

Also, on another matter, was Lambert some kind of manic depressive? She spends the entire movie crying! She's possibly one of the worst characters I've ever seen in a movie.

1. Enjoying watching Ripley strip-off like the rest of us?:techman::lol:

2. Frankly given the situation I think Lambert's barely concealed hysteria was perfectly sensible, Veronica Cartwright does a great job in the role

It could have woken up and had the strength to kill her in her sleep. I certainly wouldn't have taken that chance!

Yeah we saw at the beginning of Alien 3 that they could easily break into those capsules.

But there was no Alien 3 it went straight to Alien Ressurection?
Damn, I'm getting those weird emails from Lacuna Inc again!

Why isn't the title of this thread 'What ... is the alien doing at the end of Alien'?

I didn't particularly enjoy that. Sigourney Weaver is funny-looking in those movies.

I think I just wish she did other things, too. All she does the entire movie is cry. She could have easily not even been in the movie, and I wouldn't have missed her.

Why would it be?

Uh-huh. The alien is also called a Xenomorph. I didn't want to use the word "alien" twice in the same sentence. I'm trying to mix it up.
