What the heck is the Xenomorph doing at the end of "Alien?"

Make more eggs? It's not quite 1:1 since that one alien made at least 2-3 eggs in the deleted scene, right?

I mean why would an alien need to gestate within another species.

I guess it makes sense given that the alien takes on the traits of the species it uses - so it needs genetic material for some reason.

Well, if it is genetically engineered like people think, then the original version was probably a lot like a clone, requiring another lifeform's womb in order to gestate. Depending on how it grew in that womb and what kinds of genes mixed together, it may simply have never developed the ability to procreate on its own.
