I think the Daily Show and their take on it in This Week in God may help too (it's even got animation).
Broadly Scientology is only slightly less whacked out than Christianity and should be avoided at all costs.

I'm not religious but christianity is far away from Scientology.
Christians (usually.. apart from some hardcore fanatics) don't:
- make your life a living hell if you decide to leave, i.e. they don't terrorize you with phone calls and threats
- don't make you pay to attend church (donations are voluntary.. at worst your reputation gets a bit smeared if some people notice you don't make a donation when it's time but these are usually gossip people who'll smear anyone if it suits them)
- don't have a war chest (really true.. what other organizations might call their accounts/monetary volume/whatever it is called a war chest by scientology)
- reject proven medical treatments and claim only their method works yet can't or won't stand proof by a medical jury (though some far out christian fanatics do that too)
Scientology is nothing but a huge money scam which ruins people's lives.. avoid it at all costs and i cherish the day when all this is exposed and Scientology gets banned forever.
You don't think there are sects of Christianity that do all of these things?
^I get your point and I agree with it, but Baptists, Mormons, Jehova's Witnesses and Pentecostals aren't just "small over zealous sects". They are large over zealous sects.![]()
If you are visited by Mormons/Latter Day Saints they will have a little black tag that says "Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints." If you aren't interested in what they have to say tell them that Elder Richard from the Palmyra Ward already talked to you online and they'll leave without any further ado.![]()
I chekced wikipedia a while ago because I didn't really know either.
I never got to the alien stuff, but it still sounded like crap because it was all about 'auditing' out the bad memories or feelings from your past or something. Sounds more like bad psychology than a real belief system in any sense of the word.
You're on the right track, it's more about "getting the evil spirits out of your brain that are living there after Xenu destroyed their bodies in the giant bomb in the volcano.
No, I'm not making this up.
Sounds like it could be a good Zelda sequel...
From skimming Wiki, I can't figure out what precisely Pentecostals branched from (though in the back of my mind, I remember reading something about it university)...

I bet you get tired of polygamy jokes, don't you?
My best friend is Mormon and I tease him about it, lightly, sometimes.
He told me once about baptizing dead people and I admit I gave him a look like "... really?!" But then he filmed me in on it.![]()
Speaking as a Five Point Calvinist...Pentecostals are a Calvinistic form of Protestantism. Therefore, they subscribe to the 'Humanity is depraved' school of thought and think most people are doomed to Hell. That's not a belief I'd want to share.
So, I met somebody who told me she was a scientologist.
Run away next time that happens.
