What the heck is it about cell phones????

I've also moved once a year for the last 6 years. It makes a lot more sense for me to just have a cellphone than to cancel/setup a new telephone service everytime I move to a new place.

Texting is better than shouting your obnoxious conversation out so all the world can hear.

And actually talking to the person in person is even better than that. But I guess that would make too much sense.
:wtf:

Yes, because people text each other when they're in each other's company.

I really hate it when people are opposed to technology just so they can be opposed to technology.

That hasn't happened to you?? The friend I described upthread has done it to me when were sitting across from each other at lunch. When it asked him why he didn't just talk to me, he didn't answer. Just kept staring at his phone.

I'm not one of those opposed to technology just to be opposed to it, but I think cell phones can be dangerous because of the accidents they can cause. The friend I mention frequently sends and reads text message while driving, and controls the steering wheel with his knees.

Does this sound responsible to you??

People will do irresponsible things with all sorts of technology. That doesn't make the technology bad.

And no, I've never had anyone text me from inside the same room.

I'm not saying that the technology is bad. That was never my point. I have a cell phone too, but it does not run my life. I just feel that people need to be taught the proper use of the technology before they are allowed to own it. My friend's over-reliance on his cell phone is a prime example. I honestly believe that thing is going to get him killed one day, and since I have to rely on him to get around, I'm worried that his recklessness is gonna get me killed too.

I once took the phone out of his hand while we were on the road, and man, you never saw such a sight. I'd like to say he went ballistic, but that would be an understatement.

Texting is a really convenient and fast way to make plans with people if actually calling them is not an option.

For immature teenage girls, maybe. "OMG! WTF! UB BFF!" :guffaw:
Wow, you are completely clueless.

First of all, everyone I have ever had text conversations with has used complete sentences. I encounter more texting shorthand on this website than I ever had in an actual text.

A pretty typical text conversation for me goes something like this...

Me: "Do you want to do something when you get off work?"
Friend: "Sure, I'll give you a call when I get off."

The end.

Yeah, I text with people in complete sentences, too. I think it's only teenagers who text with obnoxious abbreviations, even though the few teenagers I text with definitely don't do that.

No, the whole point is that I can't say that in a phone call. Often I am texting from work if I'm on break. Or I am texting knowing that they are at work and can't answer their phone. There might be 2-3 hours in between my initial text and the response my friend sends me.

It would be like sending an email asking the exact same thing, except we don't have to be at home on our computers to read the message.

Real phone calls, more often than not, are incredibly inconvenient. With a text, I can ask a question, and my friend can respond whenever they are able. It's as simple as that. Can I live without it? Sure. But why should I if I don't have to? It's not like it's costing me anything extra to do it, and it makes keeping in touch with friends a whole lot easier.

Nope. My 25 year old friend uses those high school style abbrivations like the ones above. Another reason I hate getting texts from him. Half the time I don't understand him.

But, as RoJhen said, he needs rehab. Something I'm definately looking into.

Thank you for that RoJo because that is also EXACTLY what I do, too. My partner and I communicate in complete sentences, as well and I even use all punctuation.

I NEVER use text contractions when texting(much to some people's consternation)because I just DO NOT write that way. And yes, I have also seen more annoying "text speak" here on the TREKBBS than I have when receiving texts.

Stop being contentious for the sake of it.

Can't you work out for yourself that it's CHEAPER to text someone than make a call?

Also have you considered that maybe the person you're phoning cannot actually take calls at work? I may think of something on the spot and I send a text while I remember it and then it's waiting on their phone for them when they're ready.

I'd say you have some texting issues from teenage hood(excluded from some kind of text circle or something?)and harbour a resentment towards people who text.

:guffaw: If text messaging had existed during my teen years, you might have a point. :p

and harbour a resentment towards people who text.

Not resentment, really, just a slight twinge of annoyance. There is such a thing as too much convenience...

Sounds to me like you're being resistant for its own sake. You haven't given any actual reasons for not liking it other than "why don't you just make a phone call?". You're not even debating.

Too much convenience? What does that even mean, and how does texting fall into that category? I hate talking on the phone. Hell, most people I've ever met hate talking on the phone. Texts are fast, easy, and a lot less intrusive than a phone call.

Too much convenience?!?

You're the person who said "Why not just call??!?!?!?!!!!!!"

For ME, THAT wreaks of "too much convenience". It takes longer to text(the correct way I do it - full sentences rather than OMG TXT FWI bullshit or whatever)than to ring somebody. As I said, it's largely a cost thing for me. A $20 Telstra recharge card can last me two months and that's ALL I pay.

If I never used my mobile to call somebody ever again, I couldn't care less.
