What the heck happened on March 18, 2010?

I was just looking around the hub page and happened to check the section listing the members currently online. It also tells us what the record number of people logged on at once was, and it currently sits at 3,541! :wtf:

This occurred on March 18, but I can't for the life of me recall what momentous occasion could have inspired so many people to be here on the BBS at the same time.

I was still a little drunk from St. Paddy's day and I let all my duals out to stretch their legs at once. Sorry for the confusion.

Probably just people preparing for my birthday on the 19'th.

:p

I am currently doing a search for anything that happened on that day. The only thing I have found so far is that Fess Parker died on that day - an event I totally missed.

Edited to add - there was a memorial thread to Fess started on the 19th but it only got 8 posts.

Maybe I should be looking for something that happened on the 17th?

The odd thing is, I'm sure that number is far smaller than it used to be. Has history been altered any since I've been here?

The big issue that i can think of is that it was the 5 year anniversary of Terry Schiavo getting her feeding tube removed. Perhaps that started some sort of thread on the merits of that action?

Myself and 3,540 parallel universe versions of me logged in at at the same time. This caused the dimensional walls to come crumbling down, kinda like that episode of TNG that had worf quantum leaping all over the place.

A few minutes of cursory googling reveals that on 17th March 2010, NASA released a mission poster with the crew mimicking a Trek XI movie poster. One could surmise that this got on some mainstream news site, and a (possibly automatically generated) link referred people to TrekBBS?

Although if your figure is for logged-in users only, rather than guests, I'm not sure.

(Alternatively, and more prosaically, could just have been some kind of software test or maybe even some kind of mass spamming?)

It was the day after my daughter was born. People were probably logging in to see her pictures! :p

I recall that it was actually a bunch of spidering bots or something, browsing anonymously (not logged in.)
Whatever it was, I remember that it slowed the board to a crawl until the number of people online dropped back down below 2,100 or so.

That.

Plus people preparing for mine on the 21st (and since it was a big, round number, it took a lot of preparation.)

Who are we kidding? no one on this board even mentioned my birthday -I really, really, really miss the cake next to my nick that one day of the year :weep:

But I think we're on to something Seeker might actually be right:
