The writer of that episode claimed the Nepenthe episode was his favourite Season 1 episode, so I don't think it was meant to be a negative message towards the episode.

Whether it was intended to be or not, it came off that way. The anti-season 1 and 2 fans took it that way and it gave them validation. Given the storyline of season 3- rewriting the way they felt, Deanna playing mind games with Riker's feelings, basically ignoring Kestra, everything being about Thad after they seemed somewhat at peace in season 1- and hearing Matalas say he had issues with how they were portrayed and that he wanted his take on it, it seems pretty obvious he wanted to undo that episode and hand wave it away as much as he could.

I think what ultimately sours what should have been a glorious reunion is the sheer amount of undoing and handwaving that went off through the season. Particularly egregious to me was the way Laris was reintroduced and then subsequently brushed under the carpet.

It certainly creates an ugly picture in retrospect.

Well, it feels like those larger themes that are ignored from film to film. Spock talks about "weeping for V'Ger as for a brother" and then we meet his brother later on and Spock almost shoots him.

Picard looses his family and doesn't feel that urge in Insurrection.

There is a lot of aspects of Picard that act more like films than seasons of a series.

It’s possible to recognise the faults of something while still liking it.

I liked Picard Season 3. There are however many aspects of it which I disliked. Same for any Star Trek.

Besides the only people with real power are Alex Kurtzman and the CBS / Paramount+ executives. They're the ones controlling the gate...

After completing my very long effort at a TNG rewatch, along with the movies, I just started rewatching Picard. I haven't watched season one since right before season two came out. I’m enjoying the hell out of it so far. Not sure why some find it so offensive.

I like Picard Seasons 1 and 3 (also S2, though a little bit less), and I think SNW is as overrated as DSC is underrated. So I'm in the "best" possible position. I get to have everyone tell me "You're not a Tru Fan!" about something.

There is a lot of aspects of Picard that act more like films than seasons of a series.

Due to the cinematic structure and season long story arcs, no doubt. I've generally noticed that less time is spent on introspection because of these as the episodes are always needing to move along. A side-effect of this is the fact that it feels more like we're watching movie version of Picard vs TNG Picard.
