What song are you "embarrassed" to like?

Ah, now you've sparked memories of constantly having a blank cassette tape in the stereo while listening to the radio and hissing "shutupshutupshutup!" at the DJ if he/she was talking over the intro of a song you wanted to record. Those cassettes died years ago but I can still remember what songs I had on some of those tapes, and in what order. Good times.

"Satan Is My Co-Pilot" would make an awesome tattoo.

I've considered it, but my heart is set on Rainbow Dash.

Key Largo by Bertie Higgins. My parents had the 45 when I was a kid and I would play it constantly when nobody else was home, and it still gets regular play on my iPod.

As much as it's going to make me sound like a cantankerous old fart (which I am, but that's not the point) I can't understand a lot of the lyrics of songs nowadays.
Hell, nobody can understand the lyrics of a lot of songs from the Sixties. Ever try listening to the Kingsmen's "Louie, Louie" or the Strawberry Alarm Clock's "Incense and Peppermints"?

"Louie, Louie" I'll give you, but I sing along with "Incense and Peppermints" all of the time. You just have to turn on, tune in, turn your eyes around.

Is there some piece of music, whether a "regular" song, TV theme, or commercial jingle that you would be hesitant to admit to your friends or family that you liked?

Two of mine are the theme from Banana Splits and The Last Farewell, by Roger Whittaker.
You should never be embarrassed about liking those. The Banana Splits were a staple part of my after-school TV watching in the '70s, and Roger Whittaker's voice is so rich and melodious, I'd listen to him sing the phone book.

Awhile back on another forum, somebody posted a question asking "what is a polka?" and included a couple of Youtube videos as examples. The first was definitely not a polka. The second could be, depending on how it was played (it's not a polka unless you can dance to it, using real polka steps). That piece is known to me as "Una Paloma Blanca." I went searching for it on Youtube, and chanced on a video by George Baker Selection.

Now I'm addicted to that damn song. It's so bouncy and cheerful, and most here would probably laugh at what the band is wearing (bell bottoms and high heels on the guys), but damn, they were cute! :)

I'll also admit that I love the theme song to Where In the World is Carmen Sandiego?. I've heard Rockapella in other kinds of performances - they did an a capella concert on PBS one year, and were also featured in one of the Folgers coffee commercials.

Good sense, innocence cripplin' mankind
Dead kings, many things I can define

I think the next line is something like:
Old Cajun firefighters fuck with your mind . . .

After that, all bets are off. :)

Occasions, persuasions clutter your mind.

I used to listen to this song thousands of times, wearing headphones. ;)

^^ "Love Potion #9" is a good one. And I love "Incense and Peppermints" and all that trippy stuff. I have a Psychedelia channel on my Pandora. "Crystal Blue Persuasion," "Sunshine Superman," all that stuff. :mallory:

If you're 53 years old and were born in Boston, I'm going to go have a talk with Mom.

Sorry, no. I'm 55, and from Baltimore. Never had, and still don't have a brother, just 3 older sisters. :)
Whew. That would have been quite a plot twist. :rommie:

As much as it's going to make me sound like a cantankerous old fart (which I am, but that's not the point) I can't understand a lot of the lyrics of songs nowadays. My hearing's not great, and the more the voice is digitally messed around with the harder I find it to understand what is being said. Probably a good thing, as they're probably not saying anything profound.
That's always been true-- thus all those books by Gavin Edwards. :D

Most of Barry Manilow's early songs. I wouldn't say embarrassed but not my normal 60s/70s rock favorites.

I'm fond of a few Neil Diamond songs, like 'Forever in Blue Jeans.' That was my favorite song when I was a kid!

Also I am embarrassed for liking Britney Spears' 'Oops, I Did it Again.' :alienblush:

Both Barry Manilow and Neil Diamond did some great songs. "Desiree" in particular resonates with me. :rommie:

For me, it's Prince's "Sexy M.F." Sometimes it'll just pop into my head at work or at the grocery store and I have to resist singing aloud the not-for-polite company hook.

I'm not afraid to admit two songs I really like are Taylor Swift's "Blank Space" and Katy Perry's "Dark Horse"

I feel like I should be embarrassed though
