Well, admittedly, they are kind of creepy. Until you get to know them. Then they're quite nice.

When I was a kid, somehow I got it into my head that if I moved around much in bed during a thunderstorm, the negatively-charged static electricity thus released (I guess my mother didn't use enough fabric softener) would attract a positively-charged lightning bolt and fry me. Unfortunately for me, I lived in Memphis at the time, which has approximately seven night-time thunderstorms every week.

I was deathly afraid that grey aliens would snatch me if I walked past a window at night with the lights out. This persisted well into my teens.
