Forbin -- I did the Ariel, yes. I just posted the model to let you know there are other fans of the original Ralph McQuarrie idea out there. Mine was just one way at it. I saw somebody do a good job on this idea in an entry to... maybe it was Wonderfest? I saved a pic: The idea here -- and with yours -- might be a light carrier. Sort of a CVL to the Ariel's CVA. Looking at where you are going with it, I think yours will turn out better than this one. Maybe you'll draw it up?
It would be interesting to see a model of the design as McQuarrie drew her--bronze colored, even--with the very different nacelles and saucers. Anyway, what's that other model, the one bristling with weapons? Looks cool...
Not sure if mine will be anything more than a heavy cruiser. Though my shuttle bay doors are at least twice the size of the E's. I may have screwed it up last night by starting to build that neck out sideways and succeeding only in creating a mess. It's time for damage control to see what they can make of it.
I have a box of left over plastic trees, dust bunnies, ratty old underwear and old ballon scraps. If I sent them to you, could you make us a model of a Constellation variant being constructed in a new starbase, orbiting a moon base? And use the left overs from THAT to make a 1:1 scale bridge of the E-D in Yesterday's Enterprise? And a burger- I'd like a burger... Keep up the great work- even if I don't love all your designs, it's really cool to see your bashes.
Sometimes, even if the results sucks, it's fun to just take some leftover parts and see what comes out. That's how this travesty got born: http://www.inpayne.com/models/kitbash/trekpage_preble.html
Yeah... awful, isn't it? The "Wing Commander" movie is a great example of "rebooting" something, keeping the bad parts, and losing all the good parts (replacing them with bad ones)... blech!
"The destroyer planform has never been particularly graceful, always seeming like a cobbling-together of spare parts"
The Preble makes me think that someone at BuShips saw "Junior" riding the back of the "D" and went "Hey...".
And I named it Preble because I have a coworker that was on the Preble (DD46) in the 1980s, and says it was the crappiest ship in the fleet, with one dead screw for his whole tour. I did it just to bust him.
Quick update: I'm thinking "USS Artemis." Goddess of the hunt, it's arrowhead shaped... any tenuous connection for name.
What you gotta do is lob off the saucer, add a tubular section, and then a bulbous head and there you go!
This would make a great presidential Airforce One. A trtavelling White House for the UFP president and the secondary hull is all conference rooms and what not.
Damn, I like the way that looks John. I might like it better with the TOS architecture, but it works this way as well.
