What SF/F Series/Film/Franchise Do You Like, But No-one Else Seems To?

Re: What SF/F Series/Film/Franchise Do You Like, But No-one Else Seems

It doesn't get much lonelier than being an avid Charlie Jade fan. That and I really like lynch's Dune.

Oh, and Robotech. Very important to mention that one. I spent most of my childhood catching that on Cartoon Network's Toonami.

Robotech was great. I watched it during its original broadcast. Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles is a great sequel, too!

Hercules and Xena. Some of the best characters ever created with a great blend of comedy and drama. The overwhelming cheesiness of the two shows only made them better.

Both were excellent shows that unfortunately tanked 'writing-wise' in their final seasons. Both introduced the world to a host of NZ talent that have since gone on to international success. And I am surprised that they never achieved better re-run syndication post-series. And is it just me or did the success of these shows possibly contribute to LOTR being made in NZ?

Oh, that's a definite possibility, considering how many Kiwis were in both.

And count another Herc/Xena fan here. I once had one of the show's producers mistake me for Renee O'Connor at Dragon*Con about 10 years ago. That was fun.

I will forever defend Alien3 as having a proper place in the franchise. Great movie, very sad throughout.

I also don't know why there's so much hate for Starship Troopers. Brilliant satire, great action and SFX that still look fantastic 11 years later. What's not to love?

TV, I'm pretty much lock-step with the status quo. I do agree that Andromeda was good in the first couple of years, then got stupid, then confusing. I'm a fan of Buffy, season six, which most people hated.

Re: What SF/F Series/Film/Franchise Do You Like, But No-one Else Seems

^ I love both those films and likewise do not understand why they get such a bad rap.

I think that for Alien 3 people were expecting it to be sort of like "Aliens Plus" with an even more frentic pace and alot of blowing shit up and
I'm glad fincher did not go that route, though my only gripe is that I would have liked to see more of the origins or whatever of the Alines and spacejockey perhaps rather than such a strict revisit to the theme of the first film.

Starship troopers was just slam bam fun. I think the satire/social commentary aspect of it was not very well presented despite what verhoeven says about it but as a saturday matinee type kill the aliens movie, I find it very enjoyable.

Re: What SF/F Series/Film/Franchise Do You Like, But No-one Else Seems

I'm actually glad none of the movies touched on the origins of the aliens. The more you know about a monster, the less scary it is. I like Alien3 because it was very much about giving up. How does Ripley keep fighting for survival when her foe has taken everything. In a place where no one matters, with people who have themselves given up. It's such a nihilistic take and a good place to take the franchise and the character of Ripley.

Re: What SF/F Series/Film/Franchise Do You Like, But No-one Else Seems

Star Trek: Voyager
Xena
Chronicles of Riddick (includes Pitch Black)
Star Trek: Nemesis
Buffy and Angel (lately, I've been seeing a lot of hate for these two shows especially in the "which sf series don't you like" thread)

The Sentinel--the UPN series (OK, that right there sums up why no one else likes or has seen it).

When I first really got into the whole "internet community thing," the boards I frequented all talked The Sentinel. There was a big Jim versus Blair was going on. I even went to a convention in Texas that was overwhelmed with Sentinel discussion, music videos and merchandise.

But here? No one seems to know it, let alone like it. And none of my "non-geek" friends know it at all.

But I adore it. As cheesy as it was, I loved the chemistry between the two guys. I loved the whole "superpowers from ancient times" thing, the strange mix of shamanism with the modern cop drama, the Spirit Guides, etc. I bought the whole thing--hook, line and sinker.

And, I'm such a geek for the show that it complete cracks up me when my hubby and I watch The Sarah Conner Chronicles, because the FBI agent is named James Ellison.

Alas, I am alone in my geeky obsession.

That's a good point and an interesting way of looking at it. I agree; the more you know about it the less mysterious and threatening it becomes

Isn't Peter Jackson a New Zealander? Wouldn't that have more to do with it than Xena?

I'm surprised that they never made a Xena movie. It was such an icon in its day, right next to The X-Files & Star Trek: The Next Generation.

I saw a few episodes. Mostly I remember the 2-parter with Jeri Ryan as the bad guy. I thought it was a decent show although it's a little disturbing seeing how many of its fansites are inundated with Ellison/Sandburg slash.

Re: What SF/F Series/Film/Franchise Do You Like, But No-one Else Seems

^ Yeah, that *does* really freak me out. I will NEVER understand the turn on there. That's a whole field of psychology just CRYING OUT to be explored.

I'm with you on most of these. I liked Pitch Black, and TCOR.
Xena was a fun show, and anyone that took it too seriously, didn't like it.
ST:VOY was nowhere near as bad as people say it was, and NEM was better than Insurrection, in my opinion.

Buffy and Angel were IMO wonderful shows. I've noticed a great deal of backlash on this board against them recently, too. Why? They have great characters, good writing, excellent production design, are consistently good and well-acted, and contain some of my favourite episodes of television, genre or otherwise, ever. What more could anyone want?

I like Buffy S6 a lot, most people seem to hate it. It's still a controversial season, because of the noticeably more dark atmosphere, and some of the nasty things the characters go through during that year.
