What SF/F Series/Film/Franchise Do You Like, But No-one Else Seems To?

Re: What SF/F Series/Film/Franchise Do You Like, But No-one Else Seems

The Newcomers, in the very least, are three-dimensional aliens. They have diversity in their culture, physical appearance, religion, etc. Some episodes highlight more elements of this than others, but they were much more consistently fleshed out than any other alien I've seen on television.

Far cry from the "throw up the same back-drop every time for this species" method of Star Trek, Babylon 5, and other shows. But of course Alien Nation only had one alien race to deal with.

The difference here is that the Newcomers were the central focus of the story. Every week they were front and center. They had to have depth of character and background and dimension, or else the entire premise falls apart. B5 and to some extent Trek, the story was more on the central cast, hence why such detailed background was not as required for say The Shadows.

I like the Myst series of games and novels. I have yet to meet someone on the face of the Earth who would know what I'm talking about when I say "linking book" or "D'ni"

:techman::techman: I love the Myst series! Myst and Riven were the whole reason why I built my first PC (I needed a new graphics card, but in the world of PC upgrades you usually end up with and entirely new pc.) Its sad that the market for these types of games have died off. I'm hoping there will be a rebirth of some sort.

Earth's Final Conflict was another of my favorites.

American Godzilla.

I honestly don't know what people were expecting when they complained about this film. "It's stupid, it doesn't look real, the actors sucked, blah blah blah..."

Yes, of course all these things are true because IT'S A GODZILLA MOVIE! Y'know, the series where THE GUYS IN THE RUBBER SUITS WRESTLE EACH OTHER AROUND THE CARDBOARD BUILDINGS???

Marone...

Yeah, I like that one, too. Also like the Wallflowers cover of Bowie that was on the soundtrack.

Though P-Diddy ripping a Led Zep Jimmy Page guitar riff sucked.

:wtf:

Anyone else here like Seven Days? It used to come on right before VGR and once I'd seen some of it, I always made sure to catch them both.

Oh, and Robotech. Very important to mention that one. I spent most of my childhood catching that on Cartoon Network's Toonami.

Although it's not SF/F, it is somewhat revisionist history, so I nominate A Knight's Tale. Lots of people seemed to not like it because it deliberately added a bunch of modern anachronisms to its medieval setting. In other circumstances, I agree that it would be annoying. But A Knight's Tale does it with such self assurance that I never questioned it. It just feels right. (BTW, Ledger's love interest in the film is damn smokin'!)

Amen! In fact, towards the end, I looked forward to Wednesdays more for 7 Days than for Voyager. I'm just crossing my fingers hoping that CBS will get off their butts and put 7 Days out on DVD!

I really enjoyed the Ang Lee Hulk film.

I also liked most of Enterprise apart from the first half of season 2.

I like Aeon Flux......the animated series, not the lame movie. It's a little liked, but it's a very cult series.

Without a doubt the smartest thing ever on MTV (ick!), and a really unique and out there concept for television. It's so violent, filled with twisting fast paced plots. You really have to pay attention or you'll get lost in this show.

Haven't seen Aeon Flux? watch it here. there's some commercials, but it's workable.

Robotech is beloved by fans there is a lot of nostalgia going for that series, the only hate you'll encounter for it is from Macross purists. Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 is one series that didn't get a whole lot of love in the states for it's dated animation and music, I know that in Japan the show is adored but that's not the case in the states. The same can be said for the other UC series in the states they may have done halfway decent but they didn't have the same impact that Wing did. Blake's 7 is another show I see that doesn't get a whole lot of love since it features cheap sets and cardboard looking starships. I could go on all day about how people don't like shows because of dated animation or special effects.

Alien Resurrection
Stargate Atlantis (well I wouldn't say SA doesn't have fans, but it doesn't appear to get a lot of love on its board. However, I don't think the show is all that bad)
The Chronicles of Riddick
Andromeda (Seasons 1-2)
Star Wars prequels
Star Trek V
Star Trek Insurrection
Star Trek Nemesis

After reading one of the other threads on this board, I guess I would have to say that I like Shyamalan films. I really love everything up to Signs and I don't mind The Village or The Lady in the Water for that matter. I think too many people dislike these films because they did not live up to what other people thought they should have been (kind of like many reactions to Enterprise on this board).

There is not nearly enough Primeval love floating around this board for me.

It's become my new crack-level-must-watch-immediately TV.

I've seen one and liked it-I have 3 on my DVR waiting to be marathoned.I'll let you know.

Re: What SF/F Series/Film/Franchise Do You Like, But No-one Else Seems

There was a short-lived anthology series on Sci-Fi some years back that I absolutely adored: Welcome to Paradox, about a small futuristic town where some truly classic science-fiction stories took place. I got hooked when they broadcast an adaptation of James Tiptree's "The Girl Who Was Plugged In," and hung around to see some other very interesting fare. One I remember featured Ice-T as a prisoner trying to escape a prison that kept its inhabitants from fleeing by use of compelling illusions rather than by physical barriers. He wasn't at all a sympathetic character, and yet his plight was genuinely moving.

Not only do I not know anyone else who liked this show, I don't know anyone else who even remembers it!

And while these two qualify more as guilty pleasures than anything else, I actually had quite a lot of fun watching The Avengers (the movie with Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman) and Howard the Duck.

Re: What SF/F Series/Film/Franchise Do You Like, But No-one Else Seems

Hercules and Xena. Some of the best characters ever created with a great blend of comedy and drama. The overwhelming cheesiness of the two shows only made them better.

Both were excellent shows that unfortunately tanked 'writing-wise' in their final seasons. Both introduced the world to a host of NZ talent that have since gone on to international success. And I am surprised that they never achieved better re-run syndication post-series. And is it just me or did the success of these shows possibly contribute to LOTR being made in NZ?

I also liked 'Blade the Series'. It looks like that new HBO show is borrowing a bit from it too.
