What SF/F Series/Film/Franchise Do You Like, But No-one Else Seems To?

Mysterion

Kind of companion to the "which can't you stomach" thread.

For me, it would be Andromeda.

Okay, it had a low budget, and the series kind of went off the rails after the second season, but it was a lot of fun, IMO. I believe that if it had the same sort of budget given to the ST series, and they'd let RHW keep running the show ffor all five years, it'd be considered a classic now.

Judging from this weeks' thread, I like Heroes more than a lot of people do. :rommie:

There really isn't any franchise that I like that is generally loathed, but there are some that I'm more tolerant of, despite their flaws, such as Heroes' penchant for melodramatic excess and plotting that depends on characters being stupid.

Re: What SF/F Series/Film/Franchise Do You Like, But No-one Else Seems

I seemed to enjoy the 1st season of Torchwood more than most of the fans here do.

I love the 2003 movie of Daredevil. I reference it in casual conversation every chance I get. I never understood all the irrational hatred that everyone seems to have against Ben Affleck.

It seems like few people besides me ever bothered to even watch 7 Days or Hex or the 4th & 5th seasons of Earth: Final Conflict.

One I've recently discovered on Netflix is Alien Nation. I've finished the series run, and the first of the TV movies. Some of the dialogue is painful. Supporting characters are two dimensional. The alien biology is ludicrous. It uses its aliens as metaphors for other races/nationalities/religions. About that, where it counts, it's humane and honest.

I quite enjoyed its first two seasons. The cast seemed to work well together, the plots were interesting and RHW had done a tremendous amount of work in laying down a solid foundation for the universe in which the show was set. But after he and the show parted ways.... I just couldn't enjoy it nearly as much. Oddly enough for me, the same kind of thing happened with "Earth Final Conflict".

Earth: Final Conflict. I loved the first four years. The less said about the 5th year, the better, but many don't seem to like it beyond season 1.

No-one seems to like The Matrix anymore, except for me. I don't treat the sequels with the same contempt as everyone else does. They admittedly weren't as good as the first, but I can see what the Wachowski's were trying to do with them, just that the execution was a bit off. Perhaps they were spreading themselves too thin by doing Animatrix, Enter the Matrix game, and the two sequels all at once.

Re: What SF/F Series/Film/Franchise Do You Like, But No-one Else Seems

I still thoroughly enjoy the first film, but simply ignore the other two for the most part. Same as with the "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy.

The Phantom Menace.

Re: What SF/F Series/Film/Franchise Do You Like, But No-one Else Seems

I am a fan of Batman Forever.

Re: What SF/F Series/Film/Franchise Do You Like, But No-one Else Seems

the matrix sequels, the Pirates sequels, Daredevil and Elektra...

Re: What SF/F Series/Film/Franchise Do You Like, But No-one Else Seems

Batman Forever

Highlander

The Matrix sequels

Pirates sequels

Star Wars Prequels

Star Trek Nemesis

I really like Alien Nation, but didn't realize there was any significant antipathy towards it in the fan community.

At the risk of sounding confrontational, I'm tempted to say Battlestar Galactica, its not that no-one likes it, but a lot of people that don't seem to really hate it so shout pretty loud. That and the fact that the show has changed, undoubtedly, but I've never seen this supposed drop in quality that I'm supposed to take as read (even as a fan - I've been told) happens after the first part of Season 2. I mean, sure, there are pretty lame episodes, but find me a (non-Firefly) tv series that doesn't have those.

This happens with a lot of shows, especially on here. Heroes and Lost have come in for the same treatment and I'm sure Firefly would have gotten it if it had gone on past the half season it got.

Re: What SF/F Series/Film/Franchise Do You Like, But No-one Else Seems

I didn't realize there was a lot of antipathy towards Firefly among science fiction fans. A lot of it seems to be "JOSS WHEDON SUXX LOL". Sure it's not the greatest show on TV, but darnit it was greatly beyond most of the other stuff Fox had on.

One movie I'll admit has been a guilty pleasure for me is Red Planet. I think it gets a bad rap because it came out around the same time as that other Mars movie. You know, the boring one. The only really contrived stuff is the bugs and the robot. Other than that, I don't have a lot of problems with it.

I also like Mystery Men as a guilty pleasure. Sure, some of the jokes are very hit and miss, and it's kinda cheesy, but goshdarnit it's fun.

I like the Myst series of games and novels. I have yet to meet someone on the face of the Earth who would know what I'm talking about when I say "linking book" or "D'ni"

Megas XLR was a totally rad farcical take on the mecha subgenre of anime, but it seems to have been too short lived to even be a blip on anyone's radar.

There's more, but I have a terrible memory.

^I joined this place in March 2006 and the Serenity Wars threads were still going on.

Serenity Wars? Lucas is making a CGI kids movie out of the TrekBBS?
