What SF/F Series/Film/Franchise Do You Like, But No-one Else Seems To?

Re: What SF/F Series/Film/Franchise Do You Like, But No-one Else Seems

Serenity Wars? Lucas is making a CGI kids movie out of the TrekBBS?

:)

No, the quality of Serenity was the subject of "some" "friendly" debate on here. The subject rears its ugly head again every so often.

You suck if you didn't like it! :scream:

Oh man, you've got that right, but mostly people seem to dislike Serenity (or in fact Firefly) because they can't stand that Browncoats have a tremendous amount of fun.

I like the SW prequels, Alien Resurrection, Batman Forever, Stargate SG-1, all of the Matrix movies, Nemesis, Insurrection, and Superman IV.

Re: What SF/F Series/Film/Franchise Do You Like, But No-one Else Seems

The Core - while the science there is obviously taken from some other dimension, the movie itself is not bad at all. Same for Emmerich's disaster movies - cliches all along+weird science, but they are fun to watch, especially when a really nasty stuff starts to happen ...

Re: What SF/F Series/Film/Franchise Do You Like, But No-one Else Seems

Lots of people are into Stargate SG-1.

Now, Stargate ATLANTIS...

...I like it, btw.

LOVE Alien3.

I love the 2003 movie of Daredevil. I reference it in casual conversation every chance I get. I never understood all the irrational hatred that everyone seems to have against Ben Affleck.

I love it too, I thought Affleck was fine in the movie. I also thought Bullseye and the Kingpin were fantastic. Still need to watch the Directors Cut come to think of it.

Also the Star Wars Prequels and Clone wars, what can I say I'm a sucker for lightsabres ;p

Have to confess to liking Matrix "trilogy"---it's really a duology---but I never liked The Matrix as much as Dark City or The Thirteenth Floor. I have never quite figured how people could rate The Matrix alone so highly.

I have to disagree that this bbs has more than a minority who dislike Firefly/Serenity. There may seem to be more but I think that's just because time has started to dull the militance of the fans. Now there's less of a claque drowning out disagreement.

Not only did I like Mystery Men, I even liked The Specials, with Rob Lowe! I wonder why I find those entertaining while the Nolanesque stuff is mostly dull, obnoxious or faintly humorous (unintentionally, alas.)

And offbeat stuff like Second Nature or Control or Code 46 or Gattaca I like much more than most any comic book movie.

I think that's a lot of it. There's nothing in Firefly itself that deserves or generates such vocal hatred but its fans can be incredibly insufferable at times. Talking to them, you'd think that Firefly was the first and only beloved sci-fi show to be buried by FOX on Friday nights and then canceled after only 1 season. Tell that to the fans of Space: Above & Beyond, The Adventures of Brisco County Jr., The Lone Gunmen, Wonderfalls, Freakylinks, Harsh Realm, John Doe, and the 2nd season of Dark Angel. (Also possibly Alien Nation. I don't recall what night that was on.)

The Director's Cut is very good. In fact, many who didn't like the Theatrical Cut did like the Director's Cut. I think they're both really good. The emotional portrayals of Daredevil & Elektra are just as strong in both versions. The Director's Cut improves things by putting the Daunte Jackson subplot back in, expanding Ben Urich's role, and adding a lot more funny Foggy Nelson moments; plus all the extended fight scenes. Watch it. You will not be disappointed.

Re: What SF/F Series/Film/Franchise Do You Like, But No-one Else Seems

One I've recently discovered on Netflix is Alien Nation. I've finished the series run, and the first of the TV movies. Some of the dialogue is painful. Supporting characters are two dimensional. The alien biology is ludicrous. It uses its aliens as metaphors for other races/nationalities/religions. About that, where it counts, it's humane and honest.

I've seen about as far as you--the first (only) season and the first two TV movies. And I have to agree with you, 100% (shocking, perhaps). I love the series a great deal, despite the 80s conventions that it can't entirely escape, the outright absurdity of the alien physiology (which seems to have been developed episode to episode rather than being thought out from the beginning--let's not even talk about the "salt water" kills nonsense). Alien Nation has as much (and more) to say about racism/sexism/etc. than anything else I've seen on television.

But I've brought it up in a couple of threads and it seems to be less popular here than even The Prisoner. I wonder why that is.

Re: What SF/F Series/Film/Franchise Do You Like, But No-one Else Seems

"Alien Nation" had a clear, almost beat-you-over-the-head theme to it. But for once that didn't bother me. And it isn't just because Andreas Katsulas starred in an episode. :D

The portrayal of the Tenktonese society, customs and so on seemed well developed and detailed, though I agreee at times it felt like it was more of a constantly changing portrayal. It felt different from most other sci-fi portrayals of non-human cultures. It has been awhile since I watched it, so perhaps I wouldn't enjoy as much now...... but I do have good memories of the series.

Re: What SF/F Series/Film/Franchise Do You Like, But No-one Else Seems

I liked The Matrix Revolutions more than most. I understood the philosophical conflict represented by the Neo/Smith fight. I don't think most of my friends did. (They were probably too distracted by the Christian imagery to pay attention to all the Greek philosophy and existentialist/nihilist stuff going on.)

Hercules and Xena. Some of the best characters ever created with a great blend of comedy and drama. The overwhelming cheesiness of the two shows only made them better.

The Newcomers, in the very least, are three-dimensional aliens. They have diversity in their culture, physical appearance, religion, etc. Some episodes highlight more elements of this than others, but they were much more consistently fleshed out than any other alien I've seen on television.

Far cry from the "throw up the same back-drop every time for this species" method of Star Trek, Babylon 5, and other shows. But of course Alien Nation only had one alien race to deal with.

Re: What SF/F Series/Film/Franchise Do You Like, But No-one Else Seems

Looking at some of the answers here...

I actually prefer "Matrix: Reloaded" to the original film; Neo and Trinity are already an established couple, so none of the painful moments from the first film, and the boring messianic storyline is substituted for a kind of mesoamerican cosmology, with the whole 'life as a computer program' metaphor upped to 'life as an equation', free will vs. casuality, etc. Wish I could say the same for the third, but alas, I felt it was a let-down.

I liked the theatrical version of "Daredevil" (although the Director's Cut is indeed better); the storyline, mood, visual effects and supporting actors more than make up for the fact that Afflect and Garner are about as convincing as first-graders putting on a Christmas play.

Lexx does not get enough love 'round these parts. Just sayin'.

Does 'so bad it's good' qualify? If so, I love the theatrical version of "Lost in Space". Everything and the kitchen sink, baby.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Re: What SF/F Series/Film/Franchise Do You Like, But No-one Else Seems

If we can include "so bad it's good," I add the Super Mario Bros. movie starring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, & Dennis Hopper. It takes an idea that was impossible to do as a live action movie and then arbitrarily changes it until it became not-impossible, then they filmed it.

MARIO: "You're Koopa? But you just said he was-"
KOOPA: "A rotten son-of-a-snake. Did I lie?"
