What series of trek books should I start?

Yeah, I'm shocked at how much trek literature there is.

Keep in mind, I spend almost 2 hours a day in public transit. I enjoy having the recreational reading on hand.

Then you *need* SCE- you'll see familiar faces, DS9, TNG people. But the regular SCE crew is great! And the MMPBs have 4-6 stories in them if you don't have an ebook reader. IE, the latest printing of SCE, Wounds, is 517 pages long!

And just so you know, the Klingon stories you've listed there only cover 2375-2376, pretty much the same timeframe as the DS9 Relaunch. I'd still read them before ASD though, because it brings back some characters from the series. Same for SCE.
But just so you know, none of this is absolutely neccissary, it just gives you some extra background to the stories.

I've got to agree with the others, there isn't a Trek series you shouldn't start. It really is insane the amount of work and the consistant quality these authors are able to put out.

My advice would be to get all of them, but start with Greater Than the Sum and Destiny and then work your way through the rest. That's if you want to get caught up quick because so far the books released this year have been awesome. The great things about these books is that they do a really good job of catching the reader up with them.

It can actually be fun reading them in a kind of reverse order, which is something that happens with me from time to time. I'm looking forward to Articles of the Federation more after Destiny and A Singular Destiny than I was before because I now I have kind of met President Bacco. Of course my Trek experience was starting with TNG and then seeing TOS so your results may vary.

Just ordered the last 3 "A time to" books-- and "Death in Winter" -- $22.97 on Amazon (all in stock!). I would have gone for used... but with all the shipping costs piled up it would have been more expensive (and I got free shipping from Amazon). Unfortunately I have a feeling I'll be finished with "Fearful Symmetry" by the end of the week. What am I to travel with??!! Nooo!!!

Danoz, did you actually want to read all of these books? Because like Rabid Trekkie said, they do a pretty good job of telling what you need to know to understand what's going on. So if there is stuff you don't want to read you should feel free to skip it.

I just want good reading.

As I've said, I spend 2 hours a day in public commute (bus and rail)... I enjoy the recreational reading and I often go through a book a week (easily). I'm definitely not interested in getting "stuck" on something slow or poorly written/edited-- but I'm patient and happy with good writing and background. So no, I'm not necessarily trying to get up to speed as quickly as possible-- but I'd also rather not have to read something that's commonly considered "bad" just to advance to story.

Yeah, as long as you keep in mind it's three - four(?) years earlier than Destiny, and post-Destiny.

I liken it to a comedic soap opera set in space. Love it!

Broadly speaking, I do consider 'New Frontier' optional reading. It's pretty good, but it takes place in it's own little pocket of Trek Lit.

I think I'm going to get into the Vanguard Series I have Book 1 that I never got around to and now that book 4 is out I think it's a good time to delve into a universe I like (The TOS timeline) with a new set of characters. Now to decide whether I should buy the books or the Kindle Versions to read on my Ipod Touch.
