What role do you feel Shran would have played as a series regular?

I think he would have been a more cynical version of the alien/android commentary/reflection of humanity...the role filled by Spock/Data/7of9/Quark & Odo

When I first read that there had been plans afoot to make Shran a regular character I was gutted but only because it was another sign of how good the show was going to get. All the promise of season four and then they add Jeffrey Combs to the mix!

I've no idea what serving role the character would've been given aboard the ship but I'm sure Shrans feisty confidence would've continued to be played against Archers calm stolidness.

Hey, with Trip dead maybe they could've stuck him in Engineering! (Joke).

I think he would have something close to Garak's role, in that he has an agenda and sometimes that intersects with the Starfleet heroes and sometimes it doesn't. I'm not convinced he'd have even been a member of the Enterprise crew (I'm probably wrong).

They would have came to some sort of agreement. T'Pol would have gracefully step aside to make way for Shran as first officer. She is a Vulcan, all she would have required is a logical explanation as to why Shran should be first officer and not her.

Think Riker making Shelby first officer in Best of Both Worlds. It made sense so nobody objected.

Shran would have been one of the Andorians cultural and military liaisons sent to Earth (to further diplomatic relations), in his case attached to Archer's ship. His relationship to Archer (why he was placed there) would develop into a something of a advisor capacity. He would have knowledge of areas of space outside of the Vulcan star charts.

He would be a source of information, in the same way Neelix was to Janeway. He would be outside of the Enterprise' chain of command, and would not be considered a part of the crew.

Shran could have been a special "space commissioner" assigned to Enterprise per an agreement between Earth and Andoria. His authority would actually be above Archer's, which would sometimes cause disagreements between them on some missions.

Running from the Orion Mafia, Shran changes his name to Julie and gets a job aboard the NX-01 as "cruise director."

I don't think Shran would have been made a member of the Enterprise crew. That wouldn't have been necessary to make him a series regular. If you look at the limited role Hoshi and Malcolm played in several episodes, it is easy to see Shran wouldn't have needed to be in every episode. Had the series continued, and had Manny Coto stayed in charge (which would have been likely), I think Season Five would have mostly contained a series of mini-arcs like Season Four. We could have had a couple of Andorian arcs, six or seven episodes in total, where Shran would have been prominently featured. Making Jeffrey Combs a series regular would have been unnecessary to give Shran the proper character development - think about what DS9 did with characters like Garak, Dukat, Winn, Keiko, Rom, and Nog.
