What races do you want to see in the next series main cast?

Lesbians. All lesbians.
You, sir, win the internet.

Question is, how do you inform the viewers that the character is in fact gay. Short of a basic announcement over the intercom. With a few exception during DS9, Star Trek absolutely sucks a depicting relationships. Or will "the gay guy" play the field, a new boy on every planet.

Half way through episode six, when all the characters are established and the audience are comfortable with them, there's a casual reference to how he looks forward to going home next shore leave, he hasn't seen his husband for months. No big announcement, no drama, simply presented as a matter of fact.

Cardassians. After all, we don't know exactly when the Federation met the Cardassians -- we do know that at one time, the military wasn't in charge and they were peaceful (re: Chain of Command, Pt. II.)
Well, in STIX, Uhura ordered a couple of Cardassian Sunrises in 2255.

As to races I'd like to see in Trek, Ithenites. The short, metallic skinned fellows from 'Journey To Babel'. They wear fezzes. Fezzes are cool.

But whatever they go for, the one thing I want to see on the bridge of the next ship is a gay male human (though not flamboyant or feminine, just a normal man who happens to be gay), it's long overdue!
How about a gay male Klingon? We know how humans view homosexuality in the 23rd C (no problem with it at all), but how about a warrior culture like Klingons that is based on family bloodlines?

There is Admiral Krell from the Enterprise relaunch novels.

The Star Trek: Titan series has features a Bajoran science officer. I'd like a similar character, struggling between science and faith.

  • Edoan / Edosian Security Chief.
  • Human Pilot (Male, just so happens to be gay.)
  • Denobulan Counselor.
  • Andorian Chief Engineer
  • Deltan First Officer
  • Axanaran Science Officer.
  • Human Captain
  • Klingon-Romulan Tactical Officer from Chal (Shatnerverse)

Although this gives me an idea, how about a Christian science officer? That should teach Trek some tolerance.

.

Why not a science officer that believes in science? And what they believe in is neither here nor there, apart from science. I don't think they should have one that clasps his hands together and goes white, and encourages everyone else to do the same, under a photon torpedo attack, is a good idea. One that leaps to his instruments, yes. Maybe utters a McCoy, 'thank God' at their survival, maybe, but I would rather he said it quitely, rather than skipping around and encouraging the bridge crew to donate.

I don't see how accepting science and being a person of Christian faith are somehow supposed to be mutually exclusive. I never have understood that attitude, on either side. It is even possible that faith could motivate a person to go into science and want to understand the universe as completely as possible. (Without having to distort it in any way.) At least for me, studying science feels like an act of reverence.

It would indeed be great to see such tolerance in Trek; TNG really became very intolerant.

It's also incorrect to think that believing in prayer means you don't believe in or are incapable of taking quick and decisive action. You can even pray and act simultaneously.

Especially if history plays out in the Trekiverse the way I think it did, I think this idea someone else had, of a Muslim woman who dresses according to her faith, would be interesting--and I imagine that this science officer and this Muslim woman might in fact be very close friends. This would both show what such a friendship can be like in our world--AND sadly, I think that both of them would also be friends because they have shared in the experience of having prejudice directed at them by other humans.

I'd wanna see a Cardassian Starfleet officer who is treated badly cause his people "Collaborated with the Dominion and helped kill Billions!". He'd have to overcome prejudice and such..would be neat!

This would also be another powerful statement about the importance of judging the individual, not judging them according to their race. And understanding that there's a difference between a species and a government.

Yep, that's them. They were never named on screen, but an early draft for the ENT episode Twilight had them turn up.

Well said. The Clergy Letter Project has collected the signatures of over 13,000 priests, rabbis and other religious leaders to stress the comparability of science and religion.

I'm not sure "comparable" is the right word, given that science deals with physical matters and religion deals with purpose, meaning, and how we should deal with said physical realities. Personally, I believe that a healthy worldview sees both and is threatened by neither. Sorry to nitpick--but otherwise I totally agree. ;)

I think we need to do with this Star Trek what we did with TOS. Make the bridge crew representatives of who is currently in the world. To represent nations that have major conflicts, make those characters aliens so we do not offend those we currently have disagreements with. In that way we can play out present day conflicts "in disguse" and present possible solutions and bring to light differing perspectives.

And we make the show optimistic. Yes, sounds crazy, but optimism is at the core of the series.

My apologies. I meant to say 'compatibility', but my spelling isn't too good and I just clicked the first option spell check gave me. That's what happens when you try to make relevant points at two in the morning.

I love to see a Bolian as part of the main cast, or some new race. Also would love to see an Australian character as a Security Chief or any other role.

Nice to see the Ithenites getting some love in this thread... I've been tinkering with a fanfic series for a while that involves an Ithenite captain.

How about the Zaldans? The race that can't tolerate even the slightest dishonesty, who showed up in an early Wesley episode of TNG? I always thought they'd be interesting from a philosophical standpoint.

Human, human, human, human, human, human and an alien 'outsider'. Worked for the original series.

I'm kind of with BillJ on this one - it did work for TOS and it works really well in the Vanguard novel series.
