What powers Data?

Mr. Laser Beam

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
I can't remember, was there ever a TNG episode (or film) which dealt with Data's power needs?

Meaning, does he have to "recharge" himself like a battery, does he swap out a spent power module for a new one, etc.

The byproduct of a unicorn's sole diet of baked beans?

In seriousness, for all stated capabilities, the power source was never mentioned. It would likely be self-renewing. Or he plugs into a socket on the ship with a specially designed attachment he created, since Dr Soong would have kept the blueprints and other documentation integrated... he had to, or else Data wouldn't have been able to construct Lol so quickly.

In ST:Insurrection, Data says that "my power cells continually recharge themselves". Sounds very much as if they're energy storage devices that draw external power, like the batteries of an electric car. Only, the recharging system is wireless.

Makes sense: Data is supposed to have been built in and for a UFP colony, and would be compatible with UFP recharging networks, just like any random PADD or tricorder or phaser or groundcar. And "continually" would not mean "continuously", allowing Data to not be recharging at the very moment he makes the statement - as he is on a non-UFP planet that shuns technology and thus probably lacks a compatible wireless network.

How long Data can survive without the power net, we don't know for certain. He has operated for weeks outside such on occasion ("Thine Own Self", say), but whether he could go on for years is unknown, because whenever he's awakened from a long slumber, the heroes fuss around him with UFP technology.

Based on the ST:INS formulation, though, I'd discount any actual power-generating system within him. If he were producing his own power, he'd not be droning about his batteries. And he has little reason to lie to the kid he's addressing there.

His systems diagram shows a "chemical fuel reaction unit", so probably the food he eats and the "semi-organic nutrient suspension in a silicon-based liquid medium" he occasionally consumes for lubrication also charges his batteries, though he doesn't strictly need them when more efficient methods are available.

Season One tech drawings of Data's cabin (in the Starlog collectible magazine?) showed a bed that he used to recharge, but this was never featured in an episode. Precursor of a Borg regeneration alcove?

If they're constantly recharging, this implies that there's power generation occurring inside Data that does the recharging. The power has to be coming from somewhere.

A small reactor.

That all also sounds to me like he has the ability to consume things for fuel... kind of like the humans that Soong designed him to emulate. As such, I also like to think he has the ability to absorb the radiant energy that's just out there in the universe & convert that as well, even if that's never really been said. There's probably a number of systems contributing

So why doesn't Data say so? Why does he say the exact opposite, referring to a component that is being recharged rather than to a component that would be doing the recharging?

If the answer to "How are you powered?" is "By power cells that are continually recharged", then Data runs on batteries, not on a "true" power source.

But of course the kid doesn't ask directly. He wonders instead whether Data ever becomes tired. And a slightly misleading answer might be in order there, to keep things simple.
