What people, deities, planets, etc need a starship named for them?

USS Jack Layton
USS Tommy Douglas
I approve. :)
Two of the greatest Prime Ministers Canada never had. :(

Maybe they both got to be P.M. in the Star Trek Universe...
It was really a shame about Jack Layton. Given the crap going now with the "Fair" Elections Act that's really meant to disenfranchise a whole lot of people, Layton would have had a better than excellent chance of becoming Prime Minister in 2015.

Exactly. Is the U.S.S. Marx named after Karl . . . or Groucho, Harpo, or Chico?

(Let's be honest here. Nobody would name a starship after Zeppo.)
Wasn't one of the minor bosses in A Piece of the Action named Zeppo? Or was that only in the James Blish adaptation?

On the other hand, if a captain were confronting an enemy and had to say, "I am Captain ____ of the U.S.S. Zeppo Marx" and the enemy knew anything about Earth's past popular culture, there would be no shots fired; the enemy ship's crew would all die laughing.

USS New York City

USS Obama

USS Malcolm X

USS Chavez

USS Hitchens

USS LaMatya (I think thats how you spell it - that badass Vulcan cat-thing)

USS Derrida

USS Trotsky

USS Dawkins

Not including a person's first name on the basis of assuming everyone would recognize just the last name is a very humanocentric attitude, if you ask me. Why should a Vulcan or a Trill be expected to know, for example, that the USS Franklin is named for Benjamin Franklin and not Rosalind Franklin?

It gets even more confusing when the person's last name happens to also be a common noun. TheGoodStuff's suggestion of the USS Mill is clearly meant as a reference to John Stuart Mill, but would the average Ferengi realize that? Or would he think those strange hew-mons named one of their ships after an industrial apparatus?

And good luck trying to figure out to whom Starfleet is trying to pay tribute if they ever named a ship the USS Smith...

I dunno. He actually has a connection to the space program.

A person serving a deity. ;) (Specifically, a FDNY chaplain - the first recorded victim of the 9/11 attacks.)

ECS Mychal Judge

(As to why I picked a civilian cargo freighter? Several reasons. 1) Since Father Judge was a man of the cloth, I thought it inappropriate to assign his name to a Starfleet military vessel. 2) ENT is my favorite Trek show. 3) There is no #3.)

Thing is....who cares? If a Vulcan ship arrived in orbit right now, named after an awesome Vulcan scientist...you wouldn't have a clue who it was.

If a Federation ship is named after a famous Betazoid and internal species of the Federation [like a Andorian] still doesn't know who it is...I'd sorta expect that. While Spock seems and Data seem able to reference Earth history, I assume a vast amount of non-human Federation citizens would not have a clue who Abraham Lincoln is, regardless if a ship is bestowed with both names or not.

External species [like the aforementioned Ferengi] matter even less. If the Hirogen dont know who im refering to with the 'USS Mill' well...tough. :p
