This movie takes place somewhere in South America. A middle-aged woman has a job where she is in some kind of train station depot, and she writes letters for people. They pay her to write as they read out what they want. She does this, collects the money, but never mails the letters. For years, she's been hiding them in her small apartment, in drawers and elsewhere.

She writes a letter for a young mother. The mother has a son, around 10 or so years old. After writing the letter (it is to be sent to the boy's father), the woman puts it in her bag to send. The mother goes out and is hit by ... a bus, or car or something. The boy ends up going home with the letter writer.

She sells the boy to a couple in a big apartment building, then has second thoughts and kidnaps the boy, intending to take him to his father. They travel by bus, and keep sniping at each other. Eventually, they find the father's family ... He has other kids ... 2 or 3 adult sons. I think the boy stays with them, and the woman goes off somewhere.

I saw this on some cable channel 3 or 4 years ago, and it seems like it was in Spanish, with English subtitles, and wasn't very old, like 2001-2003 range.

I cannot for the life of me remember the name of this, and I'd like to see it again. Does this movie sound familiar to anyone else?

It's Central Station ( or Central do Brasil). It was made in 1998, but didn't reach the States until 1999, and it was nominated for Best Foreign Film.

It's a wonderful film; I rented it last year on Netflix.
