What mistakes did Kirk make as Captain ?

DumbDumb2007

Commander
What mistakes did Kirk make as Captain ? Did he take too many risks ? He should have raised teh shields in star Trek 2. He should have never taken half the risks he did in TOS.
He should have also never have beamed down to the planet wit hthe radiation in the Deadly Years, etc. everyone...

But he was still cool as Captain ! :)

Um, beaming down to the planet from ``The Deadly Years'' was one of the cases where Kirk had very good reason to go: the planet was a Federation outpost, and they were there on a routine physical-checkup mission, and he had been in contact with the outpost's supervisor less than an hour before. It's about as exceptional as the commander of a United States Navy ship going ashore to a naval weather station before the scouting parties have returned.

Given what happened later, I'd have to go with not properly incarcerating Khan when he had the chance.

Not following Star Fleet regulations and raising the shields in Star Trek 2 was probably his biggest mistake. But then the movie would have been over before it started if he had.

His biggest mistake was always including himself in landing parties. Except for diplomatic missions, there is no need for the captain to endanger himself needlessly. This is especially true on a vessel as large as Enterprise. You don't see aircraft carrier captains flying air patrol do you?

The only way they could do it on an ongoing basis would be if the Enterprise was a small explorer with a limited crew IMHO.

Oh...depending on perspective, I'd count his chat with MU Spock as a mistake...well, good for the Klingons and Cardassians and Bajorans I suppose, not so good for Humans.

He didn't marry and settle down with Carol Marcus when he knocked her up.

(Or maybe he didn't apply a little latex to his most personal limb.)

That was their JOB...seriously...It is stated in several non-canon books, that Security's Job One is the safety of the Captain.

Agreed - maybe one of the least fathomable. Here this man, who looks more powerful than anyone on the Enterprise, he comes from Earth's 'barbaric past', and here you are giving him unfettered access to your tech manuals?

TWOK was pretty dumb too - First of all, you get an obviously jammed message from the science station which is working on THE most secret project in the Federation, and then an obviously out of place (even SULU says "Reliant...here???) Federation ship conveniently having communication problems shows up directly in your path to that station??? Even a fresh out of the Academy Lieutenant knows something is up!

Well I hope they were paid well to do it (with whatever monetary system they have...)

To be fair, Carol told him to get out. She didn't even want him to be involved with their son's life.

Then that right there is another huge mistake of Kirk's: needlessly endangering the lives of crewmen everytime he himself personally lead a landing party. As Herald pointed out, usually only diplomatic missions would be needed for the Captain.

But Kirk admired the guy. He admitted as much, along with most of his staff. What's a little mutiny among friends? (At least Kirk would have liked to be Khan's friend...)

When LaForge gave the same treatment to Scotty, a known stealer of starships, people cheered...

It's a bit difficult to accept that a fellow starship could be up to no good, to be sure. While Kirk ran into many rotten Starfleet apples in TOS, none actually wielded a whole starship against him!
