What kind of Star Wars book would you like to see from Trek Authors?

Re: What kind of Star Wars book would you like to see from Trek Author

^I think his working relationship with Dave Filoni and the Clone Wars team has worked out similarly well. I definitely agree with you that Lucas really does have a lot of good ideas, he's just not always good bringing those ideas to the screen.

Almost anybody could pitch the stories the way he does.

The poisoned tea episode was his idea.

So much for him having great ideas for the series.

Re: What kind of Star Wars book would you like to see from Trek Author

^I'd say so.

I think Lucas is okay with story CONCEPTS (namely--I love the idea of Palpatine being the master manipulator of events in the prequels)...but frankly, he needs Steven Spielberg to temper it down with realism and believability. The Indiana Jones films are to this day quintessential action-adventure films--and the Lucas/Spielberg team made them that.

Together, the two are a powerhouse. Alone...Lucas leaves much to be desired.

Have you ever seen the PDF floating around that transcribes one of the pitch meetings for the first Indiana Jones? It's got a couple great examples of exactly that; Lucas throwing out crazy ideas, and Spielberg pulling him back with "I don't think that's such a great idea, George."

Re: What kind of Star Wars book would you like to see from Trek Author

Well, it doesn't have to be Spielberg. It could be, ohh, Lawrence Kasdan or Irvin Kershner, for example.

Re: What kind of Star Wars book would you like to see from Trek Author

^As ye say, good sir.

But in short...don't trust Lucas to handle a story alone. Ever.

Re: What kind of Star Wars book would you like to see from Trek Author

Lucas' biggest issue is that he tells stories through images, not though story. So when he directs actors, he wants them to look like the images he has in his mind and forgets to direct dialog between them, something the actors themselves have talked about.

Well, I agree that exposition (which for some reason EVERYBODY hates, even some writers, which I don't understand) is what makes a good story, but it's not the ONLY way to tell a story. Images are another. Not the best, sure, but just as valid.

Re: What kind of Star Wars book would you like to see from Trek Author

^I actually love exposition, as a writer. Still, as the esteemed Hitchcock once said, exposition is a pill that must be sugar-coated--"cloaked" in something to make it compelling, and engaging.

Back to Revenge...I recall, when watching a "behind-the-scenes" look at the flick, we see Lucas directing the Anakin/Padme scene, where Anakin goes, "Something's wrong...I'm not the Jedi I should be. I want more...."

We see Hayden give the line in a more understated, more natural, and frankly more acceptable fasion. Lucus calls "Cut!"--and then directs Hayden to do it with more "feeling". Hayden then gives the cringe-inducing, whiny version we see in the film.

It's not just images - Lucas is an artist rather than storyteller, in that he often wants the dialogue to sound a particular way so that when mixed with the music and sound effects, the whole becomes a sort of tone poem accompanying the image - as opposed to actual character dialogue...

Re: What kind of Star Wars book would you like to see from Trek Author

^I suppose. But whatever the reason--in Revenge, I'd say he kinda fails to pull it off. The dialogue is still pathetic as heck, poetry or not. (If you're looking for good "poetic" dialogue--well, I'd say look no further than the Lord Of The Rings films. Lucas could learn a few things from Peter Jackson....)

BTW, Lonemagpie--on another note...does "Reservoir Ferengi" have any homages to Tarantino's films, other than the name?

(Frankly...I'd say Quentin's dialogue is practically a cinematic gold standard for natural "flow". He's probably the exact opposite of Lucas, in that regard--as QT himself has noted, he often lets the sequences he's writing go in their own direction, instead of keeping an iron grip on the story's movement--as Lucas seems to prefer.

Of course, that's not to say Tarantino's style is catchall--taken to the extreme, character-driven dialogue can and often does lead to pointless drivel, and meaningless clutter. Only Quentin's matchless ear for wit and charm could sustain something like, say, the first 3/4ths of Christopher Walken's monologue in Pulp Fiction.)

I don't mean the dialogue is supposed to be poetic - I mean the tones of the vowels, music and sound effects are supposed to come together to generate a particular sense of feeling in the audience, regardless of what the actual words are.

As for Reservoir Ferengi - I don't remember putting in any specific references to Reservoir Dogs, but there are some to other QT movies (most obviously Jackie Brown, with the "Klingon Type 47... the very best there is" thing)

Fantastic description of the prequel movies. Image based story telling - grand sweeping battles, fast paced races, tightly choreographed battles, all of which contain very stilted dialogue.

Lucas needs a counterbalance to make his films great.

Re: What kind of Star Wars book would you like to see from Trek Author

Quentin Tarantino? :)

As I previously stated...QT is the master of "natural" dialogue. He and Lucas would be a most...fascinating counterbalance.

And they both have used Samuel Jackson as one bad --- you know what.

I have never been angrier when Anakin took out Windu. I don't care who else he killed, Windu had just been kicking some major Sith butt, and whiny conflicted Anakin winged him. What a tool. I wanted Obi Wan to cut him in half for that one.

Can you imagine micromanaging Lucas having QT around?

Re: What kind of Star Wars book would you like to see from Trek Author

They should had chosen a much more charismatic actor for Anakin.

I think AOTC and ROTS could be improved greatly if they'd dub Mark Hamill's voice onto Hayden Christensen. Not Hamill in his Luke Skywalker mode, but in his modern Joker/Hobgoblin/Fire Lord Ozai mode, one of the greatest vocal portrayers of villainy in modern animation.

Re: What kind of Star Wars book would you like to see from Trek Author

Christensen looks too whiny have that voice.

James Purefoy would had been a better Anakin as Obi Wans friend instead of padawan.

Well--Spielberg was able to handle Lucas, anyhow....

Hmm--off-topic note: The brief exchange ealier about "Reservoir Ferengi" got me thinking: A "lost scene" from "The Magnificent Ferengi"...

Gaila: Let me tell you what Vulcan Love Slave is about. It's all about a Vulcan female--who's attracted to a Ferengi male--with giant lobes. The entire story--it's a metaphor for big lobes!

Leck: No, no...it's a Vulcan female who's...lost control of her emotions. She encounters a Ferengi male who doesn't mind that she wears clothing--

Gaila: Whoa--hold on a minute. Tell that charity to the hew-mons--

Quark: "Sarda"? Who the broke is Sarda?

Gaila: Vulcan Love Slave is not about an emotional wreck--who meets a nice...male. That's what The Revenge is about--granted. You'll get no argument from me about that--

Rom: Duh...what's The Revenge?

Brunt: You've never heard of The Revenge? That's the biggest sequel to Vulcan Love Slave--it's just as famous as the first one, and you're saying you've never--

Rom: Duh, I've heard of it--I just haven't read it. Thaaaaaaaaaat's--why I asked. I-I'm not that much of a reader of those kinds of stories....

Leck: Personally, I could do without them. The Revenge starts with the promise of bloodshed--but then it dissolves into typical oo-mox fantasy, and I tune out....

Gaila: Okay, you're all making me lose my train of thought--I was saying something....

Quark: Oh, right--Sarda's that dabo girl I hired five years ago--the one who went to Sisko....

Nog: What's that?

Quark: An old ledger I found in some coat I haven't worn in a latinum bar's age. Now, what was her full name?

Gaila: What the broke was I talking about?

Brunt: You said The Revenge was about an emotional Vulcan woman who thinks she finds a nice Ferengi male--but the first Vulcan Love Slave is a metaphor for big lobes....

And so on.
