A mixure , a Federation that is say two-third dystopian and one-third optimistic. There are places (like Earth) that are the golden city on the hill, but other places that are the Venezuela of the Federation. And there are new colonies that are barely scraping by.

How better to show the stars of the new show are the cream of the crop, than to show them rising about their own society and it's problems.

I really hope people don't equate optimism with "everyone holding hands and singing kumbaya." It could really be just "a better time than where we are now," which still can allow for plenty of still relatable drama and conflict in the right hands.

Better the TOS optimism because Humanity is still around, than the TNG "ain't we just all perfect" version.

I'd prefer a Federation that has had to struggle through the decades/centuries and things didn't always go their way, and they made some really poor choices too. A culture that's pushing and growing, not one that arrived at utopia decades ago.

I'm really hoping it's optimistic. That's always been one of the big appeals of Star Trek, and I'd hate to see the franchise lose that.
While Hannibal was pretty dark, Fuller has done some very bright, light stuff with Pushing Daisies, so he isn't all doom and gloom.

I cannot vote either. All is not black and white. Optimism is a huge part of Star Trek but we need some darkness in there to move along the story. They should stay true to the general Star Trek feeling but also they must incorporate other elements too.

Optimism is key but I would hope it is both we have to look forward to.

I mean, a little of both would be fine. Star Trek is mostly about the characters finding optimism in the face of pessimism. DS9 can be dystopian at times, but the characters sell the optimism which guides them through the danger.

So, I would love to see a combination, which is in line with the ethos of the show.

An entirely dystopian Trek would be fun as a limited miniseries, but it would eventually get tiresome. Pure dystopia has been done many, many times before, and that's not what we come to Trek for.

I tend to agree. I used to ponder about a post-DS9 series where the Federation has fallen apart, and needed building up again. It would probably be too dark for Star Trek though?

It'll be optimism...it's Star Trek, after all. Even at it's darkest, Trek is always an optimistic universe.

Optimistic for sure. Star Trek has always been positive and family friendly. Darker moments are fine, as long as there's always a silver lining. - We definitely don't need anything dark and gritty (oh it's edgy!) everyone's doing that now, depressing.

Gotta remember in TOS, the "final frontier" was very very similar to the British/American colonial days. Far flung colonies were having troubles of all sorts way out there in space.

Optimistic, but not utopia. Dangerous, without going into grimdark.

Optimism though realistic, so pretty much like most traditional Star Trek minus the Xindi Arc which was rather dark.

It will be optimistic. Dystopian pessimism is simply not Star Trek.

That doesn't mean there can't be conflicts or problems or failures but optimism has to be there.
