Driving from Washington, DC to Baltimore only takes about 45 minutes. Washingtonians will sometimes joke that Baltimore is just a suburb of DC, and it pisses off some people from Baltimore.

DC was actually created by sectioning off some land from Maryland, IIRC.

(One of the proposals for DC statehood is, in fact, giving it back.)

I like that idea. Just rope them back up into Maryland's electoral college.

I have already mentioned that I like to watch competitive swimming.

Germany may not have the best swimmers and doesn't stand a chance in the relays against USA, Australia and China (among others), but they have already a hero just before the WC in Kazan starts:

German swimming talent Florian Vogel, 20 years old,(400m, 800m freestyle, 800m freestyle relay) has saved the life of a drowning woman (in June this year). She tried to kill herself by jumping in the river Isar in Munich and was floating helplessly in the water. Vogel was busy with a foto shooting when he saw her and jumped in the river to save her.... The water was really cold, about 14 C, and there were currents. A doctor was nearby and the woman was saved. The swimmer said he wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

It's not always medals and trophies that count. Hats off!.

Edit: the woman didn't want to kill herself, it was a muslima wearing a full body gown. She was pulled into the water when her clothes became saturated with water.

Football (American) is my favorite sport to watch on TV, definitely. Basketball is my favorite to watch live because the court is smaller and you can see better.

I'm surprised baseball has votes and basketball doesn't. I don't mind that it's slow but it's so stochastic. The results are based on attrition of individual, low probability accomplishments, and only if they occur in sequence. Other than the pitcher and catcher, nobody on the team even has to have chemistry with each other. It's the only sport where victory can be achieved strictly through sabermetrics. The best team in the league generally wins only 60% of their games and playoff series are statistically a crapshoot.

All of your points about Baseball are valid, but there is something really cool about attending a MLB game live. It's an experience.

I will say, I have been in a Boston bar while the Red Sox were winning the World Series, and I have been in a Boston bar while the Patriots were winning the Superbowl. The crowd was much more lively for the Red Sox.
