What is it?

I've seen this like before somewhere but don't know what it's called. You wind yarn through it in some fashion or other, and then pull needles through it. Or something like that. Don't know what it's for though... :D

You are right about its use. It frame itself is called a marudai and the weaving is called kumihimo (which translates as gathering thread). It is sort of a big cousin to the lucet that was the mystery object in my first post.

Here is a video on how it is used.

However kumihimo can also be done on a hand-held disk (which is what I plan to buy as it looks much easily than using a marudai).

I shoulda have know. I saw a similar contraption for weaving baskets on a tv documentary.

Glad to finally get one! I think I might have seen one somewhere during my time in Japan. That was quite some years ago, but the memory must have stuck. Very efficient way of weaving, I suspect, once someone is proficient in the technique.

I was thinking about this last night as I was trying to fall asleep and all I could come up with was something for weaving, but I couldn't picture how it could work without making a big mess. I'm terrible at this game!

We need someone to put up another mystery object. If no-on does I will look for something else when I get home this afternoon.

I still think we can have multiple objects and guessing right through the thread :)

I will post one as well. It might be really easy, but I didn't know what it was when I saw it so here you go:

think, I feel like your item looks familiar but I just can't figure out what it is!

Is that one of those new automatic vacuum cleaners?

I think the big wheels with treads may be a clue. Could it be an automated robotic lawn mower?

Hey, for some of that super-shag carpet a robotic vacuum cleaner would need big wheels with treads. :p

I actually know this one. Don't ask me how; it's a state secret and I'd have to kill you. :p

It's a Hextek modular graphite fishing rod.

Oh dear. I have been thinking to myself all morning "These things look familiar'. I have been raking my brain to try and remember where I have seen them. However now that it has been mentioned it is their likeness to Trivial Pursuit pieces that made them seem familiar to me.

Same here, that is why they seemed so familiar to me!

By the way, whoever said that mine was an automatic lawn mower was correct! I'm not sure how practical it would be but it looks cute.
