What is/are the reason(s) why you enjoy DS9?

I was hesitant to watch DS9 at first after enjoying TNG, however, I was easily hooked.

For me, I liked the darker tone, the story arcs and the conflict between characters that showed their flaws.

I also think it’s aged better than TNG.

For me it were the stong characters. Kira for instance. She was harsh and off-putting at the beginning and turned into a strong, loyal, faithful and loveable character. The guest stars were excellent (Martok, Garak, Weyoun etc). Surprising twists and turns like Damar turning from drinker and Ziyal's killer into the hero of Cardassia.

Totally agree about the recurring characters. Garak in particular added another dynamic to DS9. Damar is another character who went from an anonymous adjutant to a real hero, after being unlikeable in between.

My only change would be to Dukat. I didn’t like the whole pah-wraith nonsense. He should have been left as he was.

I have to agree. Anjohl was unnecessary. His relationship with Winn was ridiculous. Dukat should have gone down with a bang, but in another way.
Gowron's death was better staged with Worf beating him in a duel.

Excellent character work, ongoing stories but without season-long arcs bringing everything down, no To Be Continued seasons finales, the fearlessness of being both "darker than TNG" and yet the funniest Trek when it wants to be, compelling "bad guys", depth to so many recurring characters, and honestly...I love that they didn't stop doing something just because some people didn't like it. Don't like Bajoran stuff? Too bad, it's here to stay. Don't like Ferengi eps? Too bad, you're gonna get at least one per season. Sick of the Mirror Universe? Me too, but bad luck. They kept going there anyway.

...and finally, never having two dud episodes in a row. ;)

I always appreciated the different plot threads and use of continuity. Like in Ties of Blood and Water they bring back Ghemor, Furel, Weyoun and Dukat, who were all from different episodes and different storylines originally but are brought into this episode and used really effectively. And I really love the upheaval of the Alpha Quadrant over 7 years and how nations rise and fall. Friends become enemies, enemies become friends.

I was hooked by the fact that in tone it was a return to the "we're trying to be better people" aspirational tone of TOS after the "we're perfect holier than thou" crap that TNG was pumping out at the time.

Yes I liked the contrast between the dark episodes and the comic relief, particularly involving Quark.

I never considered the set designs before but yes, they add to DS9 beautifully.

I ewatch DS9 and TNG equally and at times I see how much TNG becomes “preachy” at times and the main characters always come up smelling of roses.

Indeed, I just watched ''Up the long ladder '', what was Picard arrogant and whenever Riker disagreed with someone he yells.
And what a terrible episode

As a TNG fan primarily I feel DS9 is a satisfying and entertaining continuation of the TNG continuity. In many ways, DS9 explored the domestic aspects of Romulans, Klingons, Cardassians, Bajorans and Ferengi better than TNG did.

I think if I to contend with the clones and the Irish Stereotypes, 8 would have yelled, but I know what you mean!

I liked how DS9 showed the crew off duty and in relationships. Also showed how other cultures lived. Apart from Worf, we never saw any alien species doing routine stuff.

I was about 12 when DS9 started and back then I didn't like it because I wanted all this space exploration stuff. On later rewatches, DS9 became my clear favourite of all Star Trek.

A) Main characters. While many had their ups and downs over the course of the series, DS9 started right away with a very strong cast of main characters. With actual depth and stuff. Right in the beginning, Kira, Quark and Odo (among others) were great characters with great chemistry. The only regular DS9 character I'm not a fan of is Jadzia, but she's ok too. Compare that to TNG, which had a few great characters like Picard and Data, some OK characters like Worf and Riker, and a lot of barely middling ones like Geordi, Beverly, Deanna and Tasha. TNG apparently had only very superficial ideas of its characters when it started, some failed completely, others never took off, some worked, and a few actually developed.

Also, Jake is much more likeable than Wesley. O'Brien is a great character in DS9, in TNG his talent was wasted mostly on pushing buttons on the teleporter.

B) Side characters. DS9 shines even more here. Garak. Dukat. Winn. Weyoun. etc. There's an endless list of fantastic side characters in DS9 who in some cases overshadow the main cast. Just reading "Jeffrey Combs" in the opening cast made me happy and eager to watch the episode. I do miss the magnificent Q in DS9, but overall there's much more here. Especially with Garak who's one of my favourite Trek characters of all time.

C) This whole ideal vs. reality stuff. I appreciate TNG's attempts to picture a better future, but sometimes it's just too much and makes me want to puke. Even more I dislike the ultra bleakness that's so trendy these days and dominated DSC's first season. DS9 hits a sweet spot in my opinion. Things can get pretty dark, there are many shades of grey, but even in the hardest times it doesn't lose all hope and still makes a point about ethics and principles--while not afraid to put them to test. Another thing where DS9 was the peak of Trek imo.

D) Consistency. In most Trek series, you take it for granted that there's a large number of total bullshit episodes every season. In DS9, that number is much smaller. It's as if they decided to take most of the utter garbage and threw it at one episode, like that Worf/Rysa thing or the Ferengi episodes. As if they thought "this is shit, that is shit, let's not taint too many episodes with it and just make a single really woeful episode per season where we dump it all", and so we got the annual Ferengi episode.

Related to that, I was often pleasantly surprised by how DS9 episodes turned out. Very often, there was a premise that made me go "oh no, not this crap again", premises that would regularly result in diresome episodes in the other series, but in DS9, somehow most of them turned out... surprisingly OK. What other Treks regularly tanked, DS9 turned into something watchable most of the time.

E) Semi-episodic/serial nature. If I had to choose between DSC's serial nature and older Trek's episodic ones, I'd probably choose the episodic model. I like the episodic model of a little story unfolding and being resolved in one episode, although sometimes it feels shortcut or leaves something else to be desired. VOY comes to mind here, which by premise should be more serial but most of the time was just dealing with generic alien of the week and then hitting the reset button. DSC has a habit of making episodes that contain 4 or 5 plotlines with 10 plot twists for the larger picture but getting confusing doing so and failing to be interesting on their own. DS9 hits the sweet spot here, it's mostly episodic but also has some overarching plots and more things that happen seem to have an impact on future episodes than in other classic Treks.

F) Writing. This may overlap with all previous points, but I think DS9's writing is on average the best of all Treks.

I loved Kira right from the beginning (and especially in the beginning), didn't find her off-putting at all. After all that she and Bajor had gone through, I think I understood her sarcastic (and sometimes hostile) attitude towards the Federation with all their idealism and shit.

Most of all, I praise DS9 for letting them clash without making a point about who's right and who's wrong. We got two very different attitudes, none less valid than the other, and with time they learned to get along really well. That's some really great development there.

Great characters (both main and recurring) with arcs and growth, fantastic dynamics between them, choice casting, superb stories and writing. It is the whole package that makes it a brilliant series, definitely Trek at its peak.

DS9 was my favorite from the start. I was 13 when it premiered, and it was only 4 months after Hurricane Andrew hit us, so it was difficult to see those first few episodes as we had not gotten our power back yet. I was a huge STAR TREK and TNG fan... which made me a scifi fan and see other scifi related things. Then DS9 came, and it just clicked with me.

I agree with all the points stated above and if I may add one, which I think sums up all my feelings.

DS9 felt real.

The characters, the station, the ambience... I felt I was actually living on that station every time I watched it.

And now, my wife is starting a rewatch with me... very slowly, but I don't care, because this is a massive victory. She could never get into shows with aliens because she could never take the makeup seriously. But she loves DS9. I submit my wife as proof of how great DS9 is.

And the biggest irony from what I just said? Her favorite character... is Quark.

:)

The characters plus the whole development of the series.

I must admit that my Deep Space Nine watching was severly hampered by stupid politics of a certain TV station where I live.

I only got the opportunity to watch season 1 before the station decided to stop airing the show. After that I could only watch a few episodes from season 2, 3 and 4 which a friend of mine had bought on videotapes which meant that I didn't get a particularily good grip on what was happening in the series.

As for the first season, I thought that the characters were OK but not more than that, sort of TNG.s minor team if we compare with sports leagues.

But when I finally got the opportunity to watch the whole series from start to end in the three recent years, then I finally could see how the characters developed and how the series itself progressed during the years.

From the start I liked Quark and kira and they remained among my top favorites.

But characters like Jadzia Dax, O'Brien and Bashir who I initially thought was rather good but not more became even more liked by me during the series. Sisko, who I thought was a bit wooden in the beginning became a real force of power during the series. he could be a real bada** too! I also liked the interaction between Bashir and O'Brien.

Garak who I thought would be just a recurring character became an absolute favorite as the series progressed. I really like Garak's way of behaving and his witty remarks and he's my second favorite in the series after Quark. I've always liked that kind of characters who can be somewhat mean and manipulative despite being the good guys. In fact, when it comes to garak, it took some time before I realized that he actually was a good guy and not a Cardassian spy on the station.

And even Jake Sisko who I thought was a weak character had a lot of good episodes and grew on me during the series.

Ezri was also a great character. Unfortunately she only got one season. I must admit that I didn't like that Jadzia was killed off. I would have liked to see her being transferred to Enterprise and Ezri could have come on board as her sister or something like that.

The only character I had some doubts about was Worf which is strange because I really liked him in TNG. He was OK in DS9 but not as good as in TNG. It was as if he really didn't belong in DS9.

The progress and development of the series was also brilliant. It started with the Cardassian-Bajoran conflict but developed into much more with the Dominion and all that, not to mention different subplots which occured during the way, the weirdest was when the Federation almost started a war against their allies, the Klingons in a futile attempt to protect the Cardassians.

The series also had an some excellent "bad guys". The female Founder became a real hate object for me during the series. A real monster! But as much as I hated the character, I also found her a great villain.

I really liked Kai Winn and Gul Dukat. Excellent villains. Winn who had a striking resembly to an old aunt of mine was excellent with her manipulation and hunger for power. Dukat was a brilliant "bad guy". Arrogant, mean and manipulative.

And don't forget the slimy Weyoun. Sometimes he really annoyed me, sometimes I just had to laugh at him.

I would also like to mention the Cardassians which I consider better villains than the Borg. The Cardassians were no super-beings with super thecnology who it was necessary to win over with even stronger super-powers. Their strength as villains was their way to be cruel and manipulative. The interesting thing with this species was that in the last season they became almost likeable due to the way they were cheated and manipulated by The Dominion and therefore finally rebelled against them.

As for DS9 being "dark", well it was darker than TOS, TNG and Voyager but not as dark as it became boring and annoying. OK, the Federation-Dominion war was heavy to watch sometimes and maybe it shouldn't have dragged on for three whole seasons. But it don't affect my overall positive impression of the series

Deespite that, there were always some lighter episodes here and there which lifted the mood and that was enlightning.

All that made DS9 to a real fantastic series to watch.

I must also add something which did strike me when I discussed the Star Trek series this summer with a relative who also happen to be a fanatic rock music fan.

If TOS was like Elvis who started the whole thing, then TNG was Beatles who came up with something unique which started a worldwide phenomenon. DS9 was like Rolling Stones, same genre but still different while Voyager was like The Who, Animals or Yardbirds with an own style and a small but dedicated fanbase. ;)

Apart from how sanctimonious and holier-than-thou the Bajorans were, everything. I love the station, the characters, the fact that many of the aliens didn't just have one hat (Cardassians especially), how they weren't afraid of tackling difficult topics without making a silly and grimdark spectacle out of it.

...mostly the Cardassians, though. I love me some Damar.
