What in Gods name did Harry Kim do in Voyager?

Bluesteel

Commander
Red Shirt
I haven't seen VOY and a few years and I was thinking about it when I thought of Kim.

WTF did he actually do?

He talked with Tom about twin sisters and played around in the holosuite. Decided that he came from the Delta Quadrant and then decided to run away. Died and then came back and lusted after Seven Of Nine.

What a pretty useless character. A recurring character in DS9 like Garak or Dukat did more then this guy.

He stood there...theories abound that he was Tom's fag, Janeway's fag...I reckon Tuvok's fag personally, can't say why...

He died three times and he played kal-toh with Tuvok. Oh, and he fell in love with a large array of unsuitable women.

He was more useful the first few seasons. You may notice he usually had a suggestion or two on the bridge or in the briefing room. After Seven arrived though that went by the wayside...

The best Harry Kim moment was just after Tom Paris was promoted he mentioned something about himself being promoted and everyone just looked at him like "Shut the fuck up, Harry" and then something went off on the sensors.

What a loser.

That was an awesome, cringe-inducing moment. So was the part in Endgame where they find the nebula with the "wormhole" (i.e. transwarp hub) and Paris is all, "Just think Harry, the other end might be right in the middle of your parents' living room!"

He didn't get a promotion for seven years, remaining an ensign then ends up a captain even though it's umpteen years in one possible future.

That's perseverance!

If they had no use for him why didn't they just fire Garrets ass? Or in fact Garret should have quit for wasting his time.

Because he was voted one of the world's sexiest men around the time when his contract was up for renewal before the fourth season, so rather than let 8472 kill him off they kept him around and canned Kes because the writers didn't think she had much potential left.

Smart move. :techman:

No, it wasn't. Kes should have stayed.

No one should have been kicked out.

And if anyone didn't "have much potential left", then it was the writers who were too sloppy or unqualified to really use the fantastic material they had to work with.

As for Kim himself, I think that we are a bit rude to him here. OK, he was the weakest of the Voyager characters but he wasn't that bad. He did have some potential which was never used because the writers simply didn't care about developing the character at all. He is much better in most of the books where he's actually doing something.

^ I think there was a tiny bit of sarcasm there...

Kill them all of and let Walter Baxter take over :)

Sorry if I missed that sarcasm.

As for Baxter taking over, now that would be something for the relaunch books.

I can imagine Baxter being the last one on the ship, screaming to the Talaxian delegation who have encountered the ship in the Delta Quadrant and started asking questions about where Janeway and the others are: "I have all the rights to be captain on this ship! I am Voyager!"

Uh wha?

I find some humor in that Nog, who was a full Starfleet officer for less than two years, got a promotion to Lt. Jg. Meanwhile, we have Kim the eternal ensign.
