I would also point to the various and sundry legal disputes over Harry Potter knock-offs and allegations from other (wanna-be) authors that J.K Rowling ripped their ideas. I don't think anyone has successfully sued Rowling and won, but neither should our Trek authors have to spend time and other resources in court defending themselves against aggrieved BBS posters who thought their ideas had been stolen.

and lest we forget, sometimes readers can get confused and think authors are ripping off other authors.

Sir Terry Pratchett's had accusations of plaigarism before now relating to Harry Potter, even though he's been writing longer than her and used the ideas first!
