Neelix was simply not Mr. Right. And before Kes could find another she ascended to another plane of existence. Ocampan lifespan is indeed too short that the "mating for life" concept makes sense. At least not for the partner with the longer lifespan.
Yes but they never mated. So she was not bonded to anyone for life, yet.
As to Neelix, he later found Dexa.![]()

Good point. It's left a bit vague, but there's strong evidence that Kes and Neelix never had sex with each other and thus they were never a true mated pair. They are seen to keep separate quarters in the series (although they do share quarters in some the early novels, but those early novels were written before the show had even aired and are thus understandably full of details that contradict the series, such as the Doctor going by the name Zimmerman or Janeway referring to Chakotay as Number One all the time.
I'd also say that Kes is a rebel and free thinker compared to the rest of her people who are pretty passive and traditionalists. If any Ocampan were to break up their mating, it would be Kes.
I don't remember off hand which ones show Kes and Neelix sharing quarters, but I have all the VOY novels and am just about to start re-reading the old ones. I'll try to remember and share the info when I find them. It'll be the really early ones, as they were written before the series aired and lots of continuity errors like that pop up.
When she left is as important that she left.
Imagine if Kes had stayed for another three episodes, what would the consequences of that have been?
(Day of Honor, Nemesis and Revulsion.)
Not popular? All the boys love her!
