What if TOS was the only series?

If there were no spin offs or movies (with the casts of TOS or a spin off), where do you think Star Trek would be at?

Personally, I think that eventually somebody would have made a reboot of TOS, like the current nuTrek series.

If there were never a later version of Star Trek, after a half century it might have the status of "cult classic."

Walter Koenig would be better known for Babylon Five.
Patrick Stewart would have no American acting career.

Would Koenig gotten the Bester gig without there being a couple trek shows on the air? I'm not sure they would have gambled on doing Babylon Five if there were no Trek shows running concurrently.

Spike TV would have lasted 3 days,
We would never have seen the meteoric rise and blazing acting career of Persis Khambatta. Wait what?
"Khaaaan!" would mean "I have to find a bathroom really fast!"
We would probably know the number of hairs in Spock's left eyebrow in A Piece of the Action.
Alexander Siddig wouldn't have been killed this season on Game of Thrones (or anything else on GoT).
Resistance would = V/I. Not futile at all.

(I figured no movies either yes?)

Why not? He already had one before TNG came along.
TNG was a major career boost for him. At the very least, Bryan Singer has said it was because of TNG that he cast Stewart in X-Men. Plus, it can be argued Stewart's prominence in Seth MacFarlane's work (most notably as CIA Director Bullock in American Dad) is also because MacFarlane is such a TNG fan.

I get all that...but as I said, Patrick Stewart had an American film career already pre-1987. Would he have been as well known without TNG? Hell no. :)

Very true. Although, how much of an American acting career did he have pre-1987. Off the top of my head all I can think of is Dune and Lifeforce. BTW, Lifeforce is recommended if you've ever wanted to see Patrick Stewart call someone a "little bitch."

I just can't see TOS not getting movies at least. A universe where TOS didn't get movies is a universe where Star Wars never came to exist either.

If only three TOS seasons and no TOS movies, TNG, etc, then I agree it would be relegated to a cult classic. Maybe some fanzines and conventions which faded away in a decade or so?

And he played relatively minor supporting roles in those (and EXCALIBUR). He was hardly a marquee name. He was a working character actor far better known to casting directors than the American public. Having been around back then, and having seen all those movies in the theater, I can say with some confidence that nobody saw them because "Hey, Patrick Stewart is in it." :)

No Star Trek and no Star Wars? So, what science fiction tale takes root?

Planet of the Apes was the dominant SF franchise for most of the seventies, but had run out of steam by the end of the decade. Logan's Run failed to catch fire, as did Space: 1999.

If Star Wars hadn't come along . . . maybe The Terminator? Back to the Future? Or maybe Lucas might have remade FLASH GORDON after all?

I don't see why Star Wars wouldn't have made it if there were no Star Trek movies. By some accounts, the success of the first Star Wars was a significant factor that led to Star Trek: The Motion Picture being released in theaters.

The argument that I am putting forth is that if there is Star Wars then a Star Trek film is inevitable. It made the PTB recognize the financial potential in this sci-fi property they owned. So, to me, a Star Trek film is pushed forward by the rise of Star Wars.

if only TOS? thered have probably been a biggish budget movie in the mid-late 90s like Lost in Space, Avengers etc maybe with cameos of some the original actors (either in their original roles as old versions or as other characters).
