Janeway needed to make the Maquis feel respected and useful. Giving them their own uniforms or colors would only have isolated them and made them feel rejected. It helped that Chakotay was on her side, and thus all the Maquis do what he says, but it was in everyone's best interests to make the Maquis feel that they were just as important to the functioning of the ship as the regular Starfleet crew was. The best way to do this was giving them regular uniforms.

The rank pip issue was mainly for the *viewer's* benefit, I think.

But putting them in Uniforms also canceled out the "These are 2 differing groups" thing. There should've been a better way of making the Maquis not feel rejected while keeping it clear they weren't Starfleet.

Yeah, but Tom's on our side so it's fine...

Also belts to keep them trapped...

And the Doctor paralysed Neelix so that's possible!

But if Captain Proton can escape from suspended animation due to claustrophobia, surely some ex-Fed terrorists can manage it if they tried? Chakotay has already been known to be able to wake himself voluntarily. And B'Elanna could maybe gnaw through the belts.

Hang on...so you're saying we shouldn't paralyse them if the suspended animation doesn't work? It's just a back-up :)

But if the suspended animation not working is only because the writers forgot what it was, then what's keeping the paralazation from working either? Or the laws of gravity from reversing?

It's like that time when Naomi faked out LCARS with her stuffed toy. It shouldn't have been able to happen, but the writers wanted it to, so it did.

Ok...ok...i hear what you're saying...so just maroon them...

Or make them wear maroon? (And the thread returns to topic ;))

I don't think they could have afforded to be without B'Elanna as Chief Engineer, the rest of the Maquis no one would miss though.

Also, they could have made them all wear those ridiculous striped clothes from Time and Again.

I wonder if The Doctor's diagnostic program could have been adjusted to work on broader engineering, before they got rid of him anyway.

I don't see why they didn't just tell the computer "Create an engineer, capable of defeating data..." then set him to work...

Very true. It's ironic that all Dr. Soong's life work was upstaged by holodeck shenanigans, and by leaving an emergency holo supplement running for a while.

Well, Soong didn't create Data with set limits. He's supposed to constantly be learning and growing with no end in sight. The Holodeck made an opponent who could overcome or match Data at the level he was at AT THE TIME, but Soong didn't build Data to be at full potential from the start.

He's like X from the Megaman X series.

The Doctor is apparently capable of growing in a very Data like way, and he has feelings and sentience too. And that's all from leaving an EMH prototype supplement on indefinitely.

And wasn't there something problematic in his program that led to the creation of the mark II EMH? Possibly Starfleet knew about potential problems with the EMH MK Is after a while.
