What if the Enterprise were thrown into the Delta Quadrant?

Picard would've started a new mini-Federation, bringing together many of the species and bestowing on them the benefits of working towards the common goal of peace and prosperity. This new branch of the UFP would also provide them with resources and supplies to help them along the way.

Janeway tried that, and was almost made unwitting party to a massacre. The only time she successfully formed one was in the Void. Picard might have tried but there's not enough will and desire to form one from the DQ powers.

Well, Janeway is not Picard.

Janeway didn't have any different feelings about the prime directive and building a Federation as Picard would have. Picard also ignored the PD when there was a higher moral imperative in the situation. It's just not something a single ship alone in the delta quadrant can do, there were few people there who shared Federation ideas, and definitely nobody who would make the deal without technology trade.

Interesting. I was about to post something similar to this thread, but you beat me to it...

Okay, some modifications.

One,the "Voyager Saga" takes place in an alternate timeline, where the Enterprise-D did not get destroyed by the Duras Sisters.

Two, the preamble is that Picard goes after Chakotay, in the Bad Lands, using Ro Laren as a guide.

Three, Worf, O'Brien and Counselor Troi have transferred to DS9 (the station her needed a counselor, and Troi wanted to see if her relationship with Worf could work). LaForge gets an opportunity to attend a seminar for engineers, while Dr. Beverly Crusher leaves the Enterprise-D for good.

The Caretaker Effect takes place. Will Riker is one of the casualties (don't worry; there is still Tom Riker around).

In spite of some misgivings, Chakotay becomes the new XO, while B'Elanna Torres becomes the new Chief Engineer, and Tuvok becomes the new Chief of Security. Nurse Ogawa is promoted to Acting Chief Medical Officer (sorry, EMH).

Kes and Neelix become passengers aboard the Enterprise-D, after leaving Ocampa (which the Enterprise Crew managed to save).

The rest is pretty much history, and goes on a similar path that Janeway's Voyager did, though I would like to think that Hugh would have been a part of all this, instead of 7 of 9.

Some nice choices in there.

I'm assuming that Ro becomes the Conn Officer (just like Paris did).

Will Riker is one of the casualties (don't worry; there is still Tom Riker around).
I'm guessing Tom was a member of Chakotay's crew? Would he be the new Ops Officer? That would be very interesting with Ro, given her past with Will--definite love/hate relationship happening there I could see (we know Tom develops a thing for feisty Bajoran women).

Nurse Ogawa is promoted to Acting Chief Medical Officer (sorry, EMH).
Yay!

That would be an interesting route to go.

One thing you got to consider is a Galaxy-class ship with a bigger crew and I man guessing more long-term means of self support would not need to relay on alliances as much as Voyager did. Not only that but with a crew as big as TNG one thing they could do is basically purchase another ship or two and use the crew to basically create a min-fleet of 3 ships. It would allow the ships to also go off from each other increasing their exploration and cover more ground in terms of finding anything that would allow them away to get home. Picard commands one ship. Riker the other and Data the third. Worf gets promoted to first officer on the Enterprise.

One things to do would be them also crying to get hold of Wesley and the Traveller in order to help get them home. Also Q could maybe get you home and Guinan's people are from the DQ and while I don't think they were as far out as where Voyager first started out I am thinking the Al-Aurians must know how to travel some great distances in order for them to get to the AQ. Also Picard and Crusher should fall in love as should Riker and Troi. La Forge could step down as chief engineer and focus on creating slipsteam tech. O'Brien would be bumped up to a bridge crew. Maybe tatical officer or OPs due to the crew being divided because of the other ships. Civilians might need to be in essence drafted as well into Starfleet jobs.

I'd say Picard and company would be back within a few months at most, probably a few hours. Not to say Janeway and the crew were incompetent but the Galaxy-class vessel had a lot more resources and crazy geniuses.

Picard would have figured a way to keep the Caretaker array intact for example while also protecting the Ocampans.

Janeway was still new to her command then.

The Caretaker himself (from a much more advanced civilization, apparently) didn't seem capable to think of one, and he was certainly dedicated to the Ocampans. Assuming we're not going to follow the old Rodenberrian "humans find a way where demigods don't" recipe, that might have meant there simply wasn't such a way (at least not without condemning a large group of another species to take over the guarding role in perpetuity).

Then again, of course the Ocampans having become so dependent on the Caretaker in the first place wasn't good for them at all, i.e. the Nacene already took a wrong turn there.

It was December 22nd, 2009 when this thread originally started and then revived in 2016 and now again four years later. Has JJohnson ever finished the fan-story of the Enterprise replacing Voyager in the Delta Quadrant? If not, what was the point of this old thread???

Less pointless than a lot of the threads in the Trek forums.

The Kazon would have driven Picard crazy.

I don’t think it was confirmed to be Borg space. It might have been a region targeted by the Borg frequently at the time.

It was for the novelty of seeing posts by both Jayson and Jayson1 in the same thread.

It really does depend on the conception of the idea.

Is it that the ships would swap places and the characters mixed together? Or is it more from the roots up, with TNG being pitched as a starship lost in space back in the mid-80s?

If its the former then the size of the E-D would be a major factor, as the Maquis would never really be needed (or if they were required to fill key positions then the E-D would've taken too much damage to really be able to continue), or would the Maquis be replaced with the Romulans or Cardassians?

If its the latter, then the show could be built around that concept, with a new starship Enterprise being flung into deep space, as such the ship could be smaller, the characters devised were very different, and the lore of the 24th century is wide open to be created.

The notion of creating a whole new pitch for TNG around the VOY premise would be interesting "what if" experiment to play about with.

What if Riker, Geordi, Beverly and Wesley were killed, and Worf was spying on the Maquis?

We would see Picard grieve for Beverly in private. There would be a picture of a young Beverly holding baby Wesley, on his desk in the ready room.

Star Trek: To Boldly Go...

In 2364, the newly commissioned U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D (the first Enterprise-Class explorer) is assigned her first mission: to investigate the mysterious Farpoint Station, under the guise of formalising an agreement for Starfleet to use the outpost as a staging ground for exploring a new frontier. The Enterprise teams up with the science ship U.S.S. Starseeker in order to take advantage of their resources for their mission. During their mission, they discover that the station is actually an alien life-form and liberate it from the forced servitude it has endured.

As the Farpoint life-form regains its faculties, it is in tremendous pain and desperate for help, though not for itself. Before the two starships can understand what is really going on, the life-form uses all its remaining strength to transport the ships over 70,000 light-years away, to the far side of the Delta Quadrant. There they discover the last remaining 'herd' of these life-forms, watched over by a mysterious man who is only identified as Caretaker, who protects the aliens from numerous humanoid species in the region that hunt the life-forms for their own purposes.

Caretaker learns what the Starfleet ships did for Farpoint and what it in turn did to them, and he believes that it chose them to help save the last of its kind. He tells them that he will help them return, if they rescue Farpoint's mate, which would have the ability to send them back. The Starfleet ships agree, though this brings them into conflict with the savage Kazon.

They manage to save the injured life-form, but must face off against the Kazon to do so, which sees the Starseeker destroyed, with the Enterprise only able to beam out a fraction of the crew. The escort the wounded life-form back to Caretaker, but with the Kazon closing in and in its current state the entity can either save the last of its kind or send the Enterprise home. The Starfleet crew sacrifices their shortcut in order to safeguard the last of an intelligent and ancient species. As the life-forms disappear, the crew of the Enterprise-D resign themselves to a long journey home.

Characters:
  • Captain Julien Picard - A diplomat and explorer, he has spent his entire career on deep space assignments, having made more first contacts than any other officer in his last four decades of service. A reserved and somewhat stoic man, he does care deeply for his ship and crew--though having the widow of a close friend now under his command is a source of pain and hardship.
  • Lt. Commander William Raleigh - One of the few Starseeker survivors, he was appointed to the vacant XO position. Though he knows Picard by reputation, he finds his new Captain's style a little to strict and formal for his liking. Finding himself back together with Troi has brought up some unresolved (unrequited) issues. He is very protective of his Starseeker shipmates.
  • Lt. Commander Deanna Troi - Picard's most trusted advisor, she is the ships Comm/Diplomatic Officer, though her training and expertise covers a wide area. A full-blooded Betazoid, her natural telepathic abilities give her an edge in various situations. A former classmate of Raleigh's, the two share a mutual attraction.
  • Lt. Commander Beverly Crusher - Formerly Chief Medical Officer of the Starseeker she takes charge of sickbay on the Enterprise due to her considerable experience in xenobiology. She and Picard have a shared history, though she hasn't spoken to him since the death of her husband.
  • Lieutenant Geordi La Forge - A young and brilliant problem solver, many raised concerns with Picard when he chose La Forge as his new Chief Engineer, but he has quickly proven himself to be the right man for the job. As great as he is with engines and all things technician, he does have problems understanding people sometimes--which is why he gets on so well with Data.
  • Lieutenant Ro Laren - A refugee from the Cardassian occupation of Bajor, she grew up knowing nothing but hardship. When she was given the chance of a better life she took it, which branded her as a coward or traitor among her own people, but she has dedicated her life to keeping others safe.
  • Lieutenant (j.g.) Data - An android Science Officer built by unknown aliens in order to preserve a doomed human colony, the destruction of which has never been determined. He is almost childlike as he develops and attempts to understand humans better.
  • Ensign Rixx - One of the Starseeker survivors and one of the best helmsmen in the fleet, despite his youth. The unfortunate thing is he knows how good he is, which doesn't help his ego. However, the loss of his first ship and many of those he called friends will leave a lasting mark on him.
  • Guinan - The Enterprise encountered this enigmatic merchant/trader not long after arriving in the Delta Quadrant. She has an encyclopedic knowledge of the region and its inhabitants, as such she joins the crew to help them but remains aboard to act as a guide (later making herself home in the ship's lounge).
  • Wez - A young alien from the planet where the Farpoint Mate was kept imprisoned, he helped the Enterprise to rescue the life-form and ended up being swept away in all the excitement. With nothing left for him back home he asked to come with them, dreaming of a life in space and wanting to get into a uniform like theirs.

The Enterprise can SPLIT IN TWO.

Picard sends Riker to the caretaker array while putting most of the ship's children, civilians, whatever in the star drive section under Troi's command. Riker fires up the Caretaker's array and sends the saucer section home. Of the ship's 1000 personnel, 900 or so are safe.

Unfortunately, since Starfleet vessels don't have time bombs onboard, the star drive section has to limp its way home. At its sustainable velocity of Warp 9.2, this takes 45 years or so.

That pretty much wraps this thread.
I don't know. The Caretaker Array was just the premise used to explain how the ship gets trapped in the Delta Quadrant, sort of a MacGuffin if you will. One could easily develop any number of different scenarios that strand the ship and don't leave them with an option to go home.

I was thinking the premise could have worked well as a movie in place of Generations or First Contact. (This would assume that the Voyager TV show was never made).

Things I would like to see:
  • The events of the movie span several years and we see how the crew and the ship change over time
  • The crew starts to couple up (Will and Deanna, Picard and Bev, of course Geordi remains alone)
  • Eventually, this ship encounters the Borg (but without any Borg queen) in their home space, and the crew has to get past them to return home. Maybe the Ent-D gets destroyed and they steal a Cube to get into the transwarp conduit.

Geordi doesn't remain alone, he just has to wait awhile. Eventually, the women on the Enterprise will outgrow their adolescent "bad boy" fixations and start looking for a nice guy.

Even Data manages to reproduce, by creating Lal Mark II (though he chooses a different name). He provides new subroutines for maintaining his children's emotional stability, to ensure that what killed Lal (:wah:) doesn't happen again.

  • Eventually, this ship encounters the Borg (but without any Borg queen)

This. :) The Queen was unnecessary and took away the threat this faceless enemy was before the Queen appeared. But that's another discussion....

How about Geordi and Lal 2 relationship? Geordi didn't seem to get any action with real women.
