What If: Star Trek (TMP)

Considering that the "genesis device" was created by Mike Minor during the re-writing of the Star Trek II script after Star Trek: The Motion Picture was released it really isn't a valid "What if..." scenario.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture is based on the Star Trek: Phase II script "In Thy Image", also known as 'Robots Return." There were twelve other scripts/story treatments that had been developed for Star Trek: Phase II, the "Planet of Titans" script, and number of story pitches. Would any of these stories had made for a better first feature film?

Personally, I would have liked to have seen "Kitumba" adapted for the first Star Trek feature film or "Tomorrow and the Stars."

DS9Sega,

Like it really matters... there would have simply been another movie made after with a different plot

And in this alternate reality you'd be postulating a what-if TMP had been based on that Phase II "In Thy Image" script instead of that tedious Genesis story.

Both of the lists are missing the Jerome Bixby Phase II treatments The Darker Side, Lords of Limbo, Skal, Only a Mother (which, it may be noted, could have been the first segment to introduce self-replicating technologies into MediaSF), Small War, Marla and Pandora's Planet.

TGT, all joking aside, why do you not have your own website to put this data out there for the world? I mean, you are one of the most knowledgeable people I've read when it comes to TMP/PhaseII/All the other work at that point in time...

Time and inclination issues aside, if I made everything I know (which, in reality, probably isn't all that much) about this particular epoch of Trek freely available on the web who would then appreciate my posts on the subject here at TrekBBS.com. ;)

I still say you should do it... web page, book, something... :techman:

Well, I was looking for a web site that gave some indepth informtion and failed. I would recommend the book Star Trek Phase II: The Lost Series by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens. I understand that the book has some errors, but it does contain some interesting information.

There is also a book titled Trek: The Lost Years by Edward Gross and James Van Hise. I have never seen it, but will hunt for it in used book shops.
