What if Shatner ends up in the movie and it's...

And as far as Shatner adding anything to the film, sure he would add something...James T. Kirk. The whole mindest that William Shatner as James Kirk will NOT add anything to a TOS themed Star Trek movie is ridiculous.

And how much plot contrivance would be needed to explain his re-birth from dying in Generations? Seems a waste of time to me. Nimoy's presence is enough to buoy that olde tyme Trek feeling, imo.

My guess is that Abrams and company aren't willing to bring Shatner in yet because they realize that if they film a scene with him they're pretty much committed to using it - regardless of whether, when the movie is cut together, the appearence really works.

It's pretty obvious at this point that Shatner's participation in the movie, if he appears, will be one or two scenes that are not very important to the overall story. If they were, he'd have been signed at the outset.

Given that and given a choice between taking some flack for not enlisting him at the beginning (and doubtless they didn't anticipate his public behavior over the last two or three months) and having to deal with the uproar that would result from cutting his part later (or releasing the film in a state that they were really uncomfortable with), at least some of the producers think they're still better off with the former situation.

Yeah I can see it now. Kirk and Spock in the Recreation Deck drinking scotch and smoking cigars with random thoughts on the recent events of their latest adventure.

The above poster has a great idea. Spock changes the timeline and at the end of the movie Old Spock and Old Kirk are there and walk off in the sunset. Then we can have whole new adventures with young Kirk, Spock and McCoy.

Because for me, nothing say Star Trek more than the relationship between Kirk, Spock, McCoy and the Enterprise. That is Star Trek...Kirk dying the way he died was a huge mistake. And I don't particularly care about Bring back Shatner stuff...but this scenario just seems right.
despite the fact that Kirk would be like 200 years old and Shatner dosent even look like Kirk and probably can't even play that charachter any more. Theres no need for Shatner he's a huge sell out.

Has it been officially stated by JJ Abrams staff that Leonard Nimoy is playing Spock from TNG Era? For all we know Nimoy's portrayal of Spock could take place after the events of "Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country" and before the events of "Star Trek 7: Generations". If that is true then Kirk is not dead yet and Shatner could still play Kirk if it servers the plot. I plan on seeing this film regardless if Shatner or any other TOS actor is in this film.

Eh, Shatner's gonna be in it.

That's my M.O. when looking at this flick.

If not, not a huge thing, but the idea that Shatner can't play old Kirk or that "Oh noes! He died in teh GENERATIONS! It's impossible to bring him back!" is a viable argument is ludicrous.

Of COURSE they can bring him back. If they want to, or can.

Or they had a meeting some months ago, and thus...

They did meet. Shatner is definitely playing a game here. I think these are smart guys (JJ and Shatner), myself. ;)

But hey, it's just speculation of course.

How about you PM the mods of the forum if you are not happy with the way it's run, or start a QSF thread voicing your concern, rather then leave off topic pithy comments in threads. You might actually get a rational reason for the way things are. Or maybe an irrational reason. ;)

How absurd. Of course he could play Kirk. He could play a 76 year old Kirk easy and he could pass for a 60 year old Kirk if the script called for it.

A slimmed down Shatner might be able to pull it off but face it, he would be an embarrassment as Kirk in the shape he's in now. Instead of a captain's chair on the bridge, they would have to install a love seat.

Shatner used to make jokes about Doohan being one of the whales in ST:IV, well who's the whale now Bill???

Bill could have showed some class and said "Sorry I'm not in it but best of luck to the new guys!" Instead, he whines and whines like a 5 year old, throwing a tantrum because they left him out. "I'm such a big money making machine, how can they leave me out!!! I'M Captain Kirk!!!!! I'M CAPTAIN KIRK!!!!!" :scream:

The thread is still young, my friend. :guffaw:
