What if Dax came back as a guy?

I imagine this has been discussed about 1,771,561 times, starting with one thread, producing an average litter of ten every twelve hours over a period of three days.

But it would have been interesting if they went for a man as the new Dax in S7. Having Worf get weirded out by him could have an interesting arc - sort of a Trekkian metaphor to homophobia. The Ezri/Worf/Bashir thing was a bit... obvious.

I like Nicole De Boer's work on DS9. Considering the timeframe she had to work with, I think she made an interesting character out of Ezri. I'll admit that I didn't really like "Afterimage", minus Garak and Sisko's reverse psychology.

But anyway, what was I saying - a male Dax in S7 would have been interesting.

That would've been hilarious, actually... How would Julian have coped? And Quark? Worf... he would've been understandably weirded out... "This... person... saw me... naked in a past life..."

Then, again, that situation could have brought some repressed bisexuality to the surface of a character or two

I think it would have been cool and a unique way to explore transgender issues, as an aside, and the fluidity of sexuality. Actually I think Bashir still would have been attacted to the new Dax, at least intellectually and from a personality basis. Physically, it's possible but there is little evidence to clarify that.

I don't know about Worf, but he would have still been Sisko's friend, and that relationship would have been interesting. Worf would have taken it in stoic fashion and would have reacted to him as another officer. He wouldn't have been as consistently reminded of Jadzia, his wife as with Ezri. Would he have considered him a member of the House of Martok? Probably. They might have been comrades or family. The name of Dax is an honorable one. ;)

Quark and Bashir? You're right, it would have been interesting.

I thought they took the easy way out and went with the eye candy, and the renewed interest in Dax by the other characters given that she was still a woman, unmarried now. It must have been easier to revisit those relationships, and not revisit or have the distraction of the cross gender issues in the final season given the dominate storyline they were trying to wrap up in the last season.

I think maybe if they weren't going into the show's final season, and if the Head Honcho were less squeamish about taking risks, that maybe they might have gone in that direction instead. I didn't mind Ezri too much, but Dax coming back as a male this time would have been very interesting.

:guffaw: You're probably right about that!

Of course, they had already done a little of that in TNG, when Dr. Crusher had a hot fling with a male Trill, and the next host was a female Trill in love with Dr. Crusher. That situation lasted all of one scene on the show.

I remember reading something to the end of the writers not wanting DS9 to turn into "Kira and the boys". They wanted to retain two female leads. I have no link to back this up, I'm afraid.

I'm pretty sure you can find that in the DS9 Companion.

The male liberal hetrosexual Trek fans dilemma...should we support Trek's first gay character and deny ourselves the incredibly sexy-cute Ditzy Dax?

Actually, I personally felt they made a very clear statement on that point concerning Trill in "Rejoined": The gender isn't important. It's about the person.

We wouldn't have got Ezri Dax.

In retrospect, I'd rather have Jadzia as a male for six years and then Ezri. :) But generally happy with how things turned out.

Two reasons why I think it would not have worked:

1. The series needs more than one female lead, even though you've got the female Founder, Kasidy, Leeta, and a couple other regular guest stars.

2. A big subplot about gender issues is not what the series needed coming into the home stretch of the Dominion War/Emissary arcs.

As a side note, they could have set up Garak and Bashir together so their friendship goes beyond ... into the realm of intimacy.

That way, they get to keep Dax as a female and the gay relationship with 2 male leads would be set up (although I don't remember exactly if Garak was a lead and not a regular guest).
The predispositions for it are certainly there and if the writers wanted to go into that direction, they could have easily paired them off.

But if Dax came back as a male ... hm ... it would be interesting to see how Worf would deal with it.

it'd have been interesting for Worf and Julian and Quark (and maybe Sisko but not so much). I'd have loved it and was actually hoping for it at the time. no such luck, I guess.
