What I'd like to see in the next Star Trek movie

jadcox@mindspring.com

Commodore

The Enterprise explores a strange new world.

Kirk, Spock, and McCoy beam down to a planet.

Scotty has something to do that doesn't involve comic relief. Gene Roddenberry used to say that when he really wanted the audience to believe that the Enterprise was in danger, he'd have Scotty say it.

The move is ABOUT something, the way the last movie was about the idea of character as destiny, and Star Trek II had to do with change and aging, and letting go of the past.

Kirk has to con or trick an enemy.

Uhura isn't the only woman. Bring on a new character or two to add to the mix.

Phasers and Photon Torpedoes are fired.

There is a strong science fiction IDEA at the heart of the premise. Not necessarily cosmic SF that has to do with the ultimate structure and nature of reality, but it would be nice.

Those poor people at the two hostess stands on the bridge get chairs. And maybe tone down the make up/vanity mirror lights on the bridge stations.

If the Enterprise is all that big, show us some of that space. There is a psychological need for open space; show us some.

Make it feel like space travel. A space walk might be nice. Remember that space is really, really big. And dangerous.

Bring on the Klingons. Even if it's just a cameo.

Most of all, keep that focus on the characters.

And if you absolutely, absolutely MUST reference a TOS episode, consider riffing on The Deadly Years, so that we can see some of the surviving original cast members. ;-)

Got it. I'll take care of it.

Sorry.

I want dangerous, viscious Klingons who are honorable in their sense of the word. Kruge was one of my favorite Klingon commanders: ruthless, cunning, bloodthirsty, vengeful, cool. Kirk must beat them by outsmarting them with superior tactics and devious cunning.

I would love to see a villain that is less hell bent and more over focus on some goal. I have love hearing some different Harry Mudd idea in other forums.

In the last two films we have seen over the top villains and I want to see something different. Something of a thinking man (person) villain.

I agree. Get back to exploring strange new worlds. Apart from Vulcan, Earth, and Delta Vega, we didn't see much of that in XI.

And bring in some more women, certainly. Christine Chapel and Janice Rand should be recast, please. And if she didn't die in XI, bring Gaila back.

Who should play Christine and Janice?

Maybe not for the next movie, but dammit Jim, they did a lousy job on the Rommies in Trek XI. It was my one major complaint - Nero et al could have been any old aliens angry at Spock. Someday, someone has got to actually try to develop the Romulans beyond their stock-villain status.
Who should play Christine and Janice?
Christine Chapel: Elizabeth Mitchell

Janice Rand: Scartlett Johansson (that's for you boys) ;)

And why not bring back other female characters and develop them more? I could see Amy Adams as a wonderful JM Colt.
I want dangerous, viscious Klingons who are honorable in their sense of the word.

I also want to see more Klingons who are very different from the gruff but charming ole space pirates of the 24th C. Hey I loved Martok, too, but 23rd C Klingons should be naaasty. And girls too - Rosario Dawson is on record as wanting to play a Klingon. I think they should give her a chance with a major recurring villain role.

If we get Klingons, we need to have an uber fight with bat'leths and mek'leths. Imagine it, a face off between Samurai Sulu and a Dahar Master, could be bloody epic :klingon:

Less lens flares for a start. I like your ideas John. The Klingons are a must. I'd like less fast camera movements so we can really take in the detail of the fabulous sets (except the brewery-engine room).

A supporting antagonist in the mold of Gul Dukat or Kai Winn (before they joined the pah-wraiths). He would be a "bad guy" in the sense that he does bad things or represents an organization that is hostile to the Federation, but he would not be trying to kill Kirk or blow up the Enterprise, instead, he would be more about personal gain and/or doing his job. If you're doing a movie with a "force of nature" threat, then this character could serve a role similar to Dukat in "Civil Defense". He would appear in multiple films, in a capacity similiar to General Gogol from Roger Moore's James Bond films. The previous films did this with the Klingon Ambassador Kamarag (name according to source materials), seen in The Voyage Home and The Undiscovered Country. Maybe they could bring him back, played by a younger actor.

Take a break from angry Romulans and give us Tal Shiar vs Section 31 (that is also something that would have the same kind of 2-film potential as Planet Genesis).

Keep the Remans around. The difference between a Republic and an Empire is that Empires DO tend to have subjugated peoples, and yes, slaves.

The Sheliak. We've only seen them once, but they have a fairly noteworthy place in Trek mythos as one of the Federation's greatest failures. The Federation Diplomatic Corps were hammering out their infamous treaty with the Sheliak the same year that Nero attacked the Kelvin. I think the Sheliak were actually members of the Federation, but then they withdrew their membership.

The next film should have Kirk experience a failure of some kind, as he has become captain while he is still relatively green around the gills. Have him learn the lesson the Picard was taught in "Q-Who" (especially if the story is exploration based).

Less of an apple-iPod bridge, tone down the lights a bit; have a mild refit to make the Enterprise appear more like TOS. Give us an actual ENGINEERING not a flippin' factory in the ship!! More Orions in Starfleet - they got no screentime in TOS and need more dimension. I agree on Chapel and Rand...something about Uhura/Spock struck me as wrong. It should be more Uhura/Chekov or Uhura/Scotty in my opinion. Also, Scotty should be a technical genius not outshone by Chekov. He shouldn't be comic relief.

Story-wise, I don't mind bringing Klingons in as long as you show them as multi-faceted and not one-dimensional villains.

I really think the Klingons have been overused in TOS in the same way that the Borg were overused in VOY- they used them when they couldn't come up with any other plot. I want a new enemy, something deadly and viscious in a feral sort of way, primitive beings ruled by emotion and instinct. Kind of like humans :p

Kirk should have a friend who, while Kirk gets a specially refitted Enterprise, the pride of the fleet, the friend's ship falls apart every time someone flushes the toilet.

The Gorn, at least as a cameo. That I've noticed, the Gorn have only appeared twice in Trek's 40+ years of existence. Plus, if at all possible, it should be a guy in a costume, not CGI. They only used CGI when absolutely needed in the Doom movie, and although the movie bombed the monsters looked very realistic.

The Duras family always seemed more Machiavellian than regular Klingons, so if they're the bad guys, you can play against type to some degree.

For whoever made the "Klingons are overexposed" comments, just because they're in a story doesn't mean they're all over the place. Ambassador Kamarag (see previous post) was the only Klingon we saw in The Voyage Home, there were quite a few DS9 Klingon stories were Worf and Martok were the only Klingons we actually saw. You can just have the Ambassador and a few of their ships, that way, they're there, but they're not dominating the plots, and you're also avoiding the "Klingon captain of the week." Then, when the time is right, you can do a "full" Klingon movie with targs, bat'leths, swagger sticks, et all.

As for Orions, in addition to Starfleet Orions, let's also have the Orion Syndicate as villains. They were a presence in TOS, even though we didn't get a really good look at them at the time. Maybe a Starfleet Orion could be the son/daughter of a Syndicate chieftain. (Though Series 6 could probably play with that a little bit more than a movie could).

Yup, bad-ass Klingons please!

I'd like Kirk to >win< a fist fight and use some of that Kirk-Fu !

More beauty shots of the big-E, I don't think we saw her enough.

I am not afraid of villains from the past returning, bring them on! Khan, Borg, Q, V'Ger, hell even the whale probe! Ok, maybe not the last one.

I'd like to see a plot focus on an alliance between the Romulans and Klingons, as they showed briefly in The Enterprise Incident. Imagine a new kind of starship combining Klingon and Romulan design aesthetics and a combined crew in an uneasy alliance.

I'd like to see a new female character, too. My own fancy: A female Andorian security chief. If you have Chapel, please make her a doctor who "argues every little diagnosis" with McCoy.

My other idea for a character would be a female Orion who is totally out of place in their society. As we know the Orion males are much bigger while the females are smaller and have pheromones to control males with. What if there were a female Orion who was big like a male and also had the pheromones? She'd be a freak in their society, and only at home in Starfleet. I can see a Suzie Plakson type play that character.

Red Ranger

Something I haven't seen before would be nice.

Or wait. Maybe the same shit all over again. Whatever they have, I'll watch it, I guess. :D

I wanna see the opening basically the end of some classic episode redone. Like you came in on the last 15 minutes of "The Gamesters of Triskellion" or some other episode.

Basically, something extra than just one story. It really doesn't have to be a redo of anything.
