What I don't understand about the show being a reboot.

Serious question: Is Discovery a hard reboot, that ignores previous shows?
No; it's set in the same universe at TOS, TNG, etc. Characters and the timeline will therefore be faithful to what we have seen in those shows. However, Fuller did say there would be 'new aliens' and 'reimaginings of existing aliens' so we can expect a visual update to make it more relevant to a new audience. This is unlikely to be a retro-looking show, and will update it's look to reflect new technology since TOS aired...

Just like the TOS movies did.
 
Unless the show is set in the 97th century and features a gay blue whale with cranial ridges as ship's records officer, I will not tune in.
This is also a condition of my supporting this series.

Serious answer: No one knows, as there is nothing official about the show's setting known at this point.
