No; it's set in the same universe at TOS, TNG, etc. Characters and the timeline will therefore be faithful to what we have seen in those shows. However, Fuller did say there would be 'new aliens' and 'reimaginings of existing aliens' so we can expect a visual update to make it more relevant to a new audience.
