What happened to the original film negatives?

TNG was filmed and then put into a device that scanned the film straight to video. After that, they did all their post editing and effects on video.

What happened to the original film? If we ever want TNG: HD, we need to know it's safe.

Shot on film. Edited on video.

Cheaper and faster, but in hindsight - not too great to look at.

TNG should look absolutely stunning when they rescan the film in HD and redo the show, ala TOS.

NTSC video format is horrible!

And since the effects (Such as bluescreen, etc.) aren't on the film, everything can be completely redone!
