What freaked you out as a kid?

The lil guys from "Invasion of the Saucer Men!" I used to have nightmares of them waiting outside my bedroom window.

The monsters from "Island of Terror" also gave me nightmares and the scene where one drops out of a tree onto a person made me afraid to walk under trees at night.

I also had a friend who was absolutely terrified by Kaa, the snake from "Jungle Book" because he believed the snake had EATEN Winnie the Pooh (both characters having been voiced by Sterling Holloway). He cried every time he heard Pooh's voice coming from inside the snake. It's funny the stuff that'll scare kids that adults would never suspect.

On a slightly less invective note, I loved Sterling Holloway. He was awesome.

Someone already brought up being scarred of a Six Million Dollar Man episode..well I was scared of Steve Austin.

When I first saw him he was ripping the door off a car and the wires were sticking out of his damaged Bionic arm and that freaked me out and I avoided the show and anything with Lee Majors on TV...but my Dad pointed out to me that in the scene that scared me he was trying to save a woman trapped in the car and wasn't a monster but a hero...after that I was a 6MDM fan.

<sigh> I admit both if these were when I was a young teen, no 5-6-7 here.

One, 'The Birds'. The birds just sitting around waiting for an opportunity to swoop in and kill. Note too that I live in a country where in Spring, birds (mostly magpies) Do swoop in and attack. My son still has a small scar on his forehead from one.

Two, 'The Fly'. That scene toweards the end, "Heellpp meeeee..." That just freaked me out no end. Made me reconsider the whole transporter thing.

"Fire in the Sky" UFO movie
When I saw that, it freaked me out severely - and I was well into my teens by then. If I saw that abduction scene as a child, it could have scarred me for life.

Heffalumps and fucking Woozles scared me shitless as a child.
Those blank eyes and that weird music, man that creeps me out now!
Can't say I ever shared your reaction to those, but the history of children's TV is absolutely full of characters that unintentionally terrorised kids and fuelled thousands of nightmares. See also: Mr Noseybonk and the freak "Humpty Dumpty" from the 80s Kinder Egg advert.

Tell me about it. I was always afraid that Captain Kirk was going to overlook a fly in the transporter room . . . .

Sam the Eagle from the muppet show.

Don't let JAG hear you say that! :p

V

Specifically, the last 5 minutes of almost every episode, a Visitor would get their human mask ripped off and I'd go running out of the room screaming.

We had this book when I was a kid; the cover scared the shit out of me:

Oh damn, I remember seeing that in my elementary school library and being freaked out by it.

Also, the first R rated movie I ever saw (Eraser) I remember being made uneasy by the scene when Schwarzenegger's hand is impaled to the fridge door. Puncture wounds really give me the creeps.

It brings back some memories like D.B Sweeny trapped in the cocoon and the beady eyed aliens staring at him while he's hyperventilating.

Star Trek(TOS) did when I was 5 or 6, some of the aliens were scary.

Unsolved Mysteries freaked me out alot.

I was just thinking of this yesterday, but a few of the 1940's fleischer Superman cartoons gave me nightmares when I was a small child watching them on vhs.

Jungle Drums - I think that's what it is called. it's the one with the evil natives who try to burn lois at the stake. The music is terrifying and the Tribesman dance in such a jerky unnatural way. Also, the Nazi wears a Klansman like white robe with horns!

The Mummy Strikes - This one features a lot of wandering around a tomb. The guy talking has a creepy voice, and he tells a creepy story about mummification and guards drinking poison to get to the afterlife. creepy. Then the mummies come to life, and they are scary. They have dead white eyes, and are huge.

These cartoons were too intense for me at that age, but I kept coming back because they were so great.
