What exactly was the point of Kirk's "Stop Energizers" command in TWOK

Or you more likely you guys are trying to rationalize a little camera roll ILM added solely for visual interest. :D

Re: What exactly was the point of Kirk's "Stop Energizers" command in

I read somewhere (maybe the Okudas' text commentary?) that Shatner's line was originally "Stop engines", but they realized that it didn't make much sense for a starship to stop dead instead of just changing course. So they dubbed it over with something else which would match the existing lip movements. So I doubt that anybody had much of a concept of what "Stop energizers" meant - It was just a filler line.

Kind of similar to how Spock and Saavik's "Nobody's perfect" exchange was made into Vulcan after the fact - they dubbed it over to match what was originally said in English.

100% correct. The script says "Stop engines."

After he saw the rough cut--Roddenberry said "you cant just turn off the engines!"

So they looped in something to match his mouth movements.
That is an interesting find. I wonder, was the ADR done again for Scotty's line after Khan's attack? Was his

Maybe the viewer image corrected itself to Reliant's orientation. It's not a window, after all; its version of up and down doesn't have to match the ship's.

Exactly. In that first view of the opposing ship, there's no roll in evidence yet, not against the starfield background. When we see the ship up close, she's rolling against that background; also, some of the "stars" are moving against each other, as with all TOS spaceflight and TFS warp flight, and indeed Khan only gives the command to slow down to half impulse after this shot. Subsequently, the Reliant isn't seen rolling and the stars aren't shown dancing the "warp" dance. So the VFX editing seems to be spot on, be it by design or accident.

I always heard Scotty's line as

The main energizer's out.
a contraction of

The main energizer is out.

Wasn't Scotty just heard over the intercom? If so, that's a remarkably easy change.

Re: What exactly was the point of Kirk's "Stop Energizers" command in

No. Kirk is heard over the intercom.

I dunno about this claim about engines being looped. One draft of the script, which includes deleted scenes, mentions the "energizer" four times, e.g.

83 INT. ENGINE ROOM - FAVORING SCOTTY 83

Behind, the crew chief and a few others work feverishly
in respirators. Scotty, in respirator, with a throat
mike which filters his voice.

SCOTTY
Just hanging on, sir. Main energizers
out.

Re: What exactly was the point of Kirk's "Stop Energizers" command in

^The claim is that it was looped in the scene where Kirk came onto the bridge to order the course change, not that it was done throughout the entire film. It stands to reason that they would've looped Kirk's line using a term that was already being used in other scenes (and that was used before in "The Alternative Factor" and "The Doomsday Machine").

Re: What exactly was the point of Kirk's "Stop Energizers" command in

Ah, so you mean this line:

56 INT. ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

The activity is normal. The Turbo-Lift opens and Kirk
strides in. Bones and Saavik react to the following:

KIRK
Stop engines.

SULU
Stop engines.
