What episodes/films are you watching in preparation?

In preparation for the new series, I have the Trekkin' potato song in a permanent feedback loop blasting on loudspeakers situated in various strategic points in my house. I had hoped to pull this elaborate ensemble down in January but I guess it'll be next summer before I can do that. :ouch:

Actually as I've pointed out a week or two ago, I associate the airing of Discovery as a new Trek show after a long hiatus, much like STNG was after TOS..so I watched some early STNG.

It's been interrupted by a couple of episodes of TOS for the 50th anniversary, but I'll go back to some early STNG soon.

I binge watched Stranger Things with my wife too.

RAMA
I started watching some TOS and found it interesting in how dated and corny it was. I then decided to rewatch TNG and it's interesting how much S1 so far is like an 80s reboot of TOS. It's also kind of crazy that this show is nearly 30 years old. I remember it being the highlight of my TV watching weak when I was 11+. I have only watched 10 or so episodes and the beginning of the series is weird with the lead/chief engineer of the week and the man skirts, but the episodic nature of the show is something I kind of miss in this age of last minute cliff hangers. It's a format that can still work and work well because it still does have an arc, its just that the arc is subtly played out via relationships and character development.

I loved TOS as a very young kid, I grew with TNG as one of my favorite shows and was a very big fan of DS9. I watched VOY/ENT almost out of duty in my 20s but was kind of burned out by then. I don 't know if it was because the shows were fundamentally worse or if they were just too much of the same.

I think I will watch a little bit of all of the series before, during and after DIS airs. I only ever saw episodes of TOS and TNG more than once and that was ages ago so it will be interesting to see if they hold up or are better/worse than I thought they were.

Even fans of all the shows like myself, tend to forget that most of the same crew worked behind the scenes and lots of the same writers. Before Enterprise, I was touting the idea of changing the visual look..new directors, VXF artists, graphic designers, DOFs as well as the producers and writers on any new TV show and the movies as well. We kind of saw where it wound up.

With Discovery, the change should be a wholesale one, so any familiarity or sameness should be gone. I don't think it's going to feel anything like Voyager or Enterprise.

That sounds pretty weird, but in preparation for the new Star Trek, I'm not watching any Trek. I'm re-watching Orphan Black. It doesn't make any sense, but for some reason there's something I've been looking for in Star Trek, but I found it there instead. Time travel episodes where you meet yourself, but without the actual time travel. Mirror universe episodes without the actual mirror universe. Shapeshifters impersonating you without the shapeshifting. Thomas Riker without Riker. The magic without the magic part. Less is more.

I suspect I am headed for my own kind of disappointment here when the actual show airs, but there's a wish I've been having for the entirety of previous ones: When you set up an episode that puts us in a crazy situation, let it sink in, then unfold and let everyone on-screen actually deal with it. Instead, it always got cut short: Contact with pre-warp civilisation – apply prime directive, unethically erase memory, case closed. First contact – successfully contained, case closed. Someone just travelled in time – apply temporal prime directive block, case closed. New Will Riker – send him off-screen to the Maquis, case closed.

I have a suspicion that if any of those happen in the new show, they may let them to breathe a little. Let us pause for a second and sympathise with characters who think “Wow, is this really happening?” Do not cut the set-up for a character moment before the character moment has happened.

I may watch ENT: Twilight or something. I have zero desire for revisiting old Star Trek. I want the new one, whatever it is.

I'm watching the Kirk fall scene from ST5 in an endless loop from now until May. Continually. Perfect way to "lower my expectations." :D

NuBSG and SG Atlantis (I haven't seen the entire run of that yet) and maybe giving SG Universe a go to see if it is any good. Also lots of classic Dr Who dvd's that my brother has bought over the last year.

My wife and I are watching the whole damn thing from the beginning. We skipped the animated series because my wife couldn't take the animation style. We'll be starting Search for Spock tomorrow. We're doing chronological order so we'll finish the six films and dive into TNG. She's seen some of TNG but had never watched any of the others.

Nothing in particular. Just my usual watching of an occasional episode from whatever series I happen to be in the mood for on any given day.

More happenstance than preparation, but I'm watching the last two seasons of Enterprise with my partner (I've seen them before, she hasn't).
