After Sauron was finally defeated?

Was there a lot of background nastiness or did the slopes of Mount Doom become sprinkled with edelweiss and pinks?

Where did the orcs go? Did they settle down and have kids or sail abroad to become mercenaries?

They built summer homes and timeshares for the restored nobility of Gondor and vacation spots for the Riders of Rohan.

Well, nobody really lived there before Sauron brought them back, right? So they probably all went back from wence they came, the East, the South, the Misty Mountains, the far northern mountains...

It's not like Mordor has a sustainable agriculture. It was a blasted wasteland. They had to ship in their food.

Ah but volcanic soil is very rich in nutrients. They could at the very least grow a few taters there.

The dwarves bought the mining rights and exploited the local orc labour with dangerous working conditions and slave wages.

Since Middle Earth is supposed to be located inside Europe, there are some comparison maps where Mordor is located at the same spot as Turkey. ;)

All the Orcs went to play gin with the Imperials left over after the destruction of the second Death Star.

Free elections supervised the United Elven Nations led to a pro-Sauronist government that reinstituted Sauria law, and entered into an alliance with Khand to make more rings. Oops.

(I can't recall the name of the author, but there's a whacky Russian sequel to the LOTR in which it's revealed that Mordor was in fact a progressive, technologically superior nation destroyed by conservative ideologues in Gondor.)

The plateau of Gorgoroth (the northwestern corner, where Mount Doom and Barad-dur were located) became an uninhabitable wasteland. The larger south and eastern portion, called Nurn, was a more fertile region where Sauron kept his slaves (who produced food for his armies). After the War of the Ring, Aragorn freed the slaves and gave them Nurn as their own land to settle.

Some Gondorians voiced objection to Aragorn's decisions, but he told them it was "Nurn of your concern!"

Now that's just silly.

The orcs, having no where else to go, decided to open a factory or two and manufacture cheap plastic toys for export. Through the clever management techniques of the balrogs, they soon expanded this business into the fields of electronics, automobiles and neon hair dye. Where "Made In Mordor" was once referred to with contempt, it is today seen as a sign of cutting edge technology.

Ain't it, though? ;)

You should be ashamed of yourself. :p

Orcs I believe quickly developed an industry based on selling handmade, hand painted "decorative" weaponry to fat, wealthy Hobbit tourists. Their wares have a reputation for being quite pretty. The food's supposed to suck though.
