What does U.S.S. stand for in the 22nd century and beyond?

Starfleet picked that letter combination because it sounds cool (and because for centuries, people have expected ships to be called "USS" anyway),

Honestly when I think of a ship I think of HMS, not being American and all and I'm sure it's just Americans who think a ship should have a USS at the beginining - being an American series, that kind of makes sense though from a production view point.

Perhaps if Starfleet originated or was based in the UK, ships would instead have HMS designations out of respect for the Old British Navy...

Only if the Federation had a King or Queen has its head. HMS = His/Her Majesties Ship.

I know. But I think in such a situation, either a new acronym for HMS would have to be coined (don't look at me for that) or it would be reduced to just being a customary prefix for Federation starships.

i did a fanfic where the British Empire never ended and became the dominant Earth power and instead of the UFP, it was the British Empire and Commonwealth and all the ships were HMS.

Captain Sir John Picard commanded the HMS Ark Royal NCC 1701-D... and the Ark Royal-C was a Governor class...
