What does the reaction to Star Trek XI remind people of?

It is clear that there are a lot of strong feelings about this movie, both positive and negative. I was wondering if this reminded people of any other big transitions in ST history-the release of TMP? The beginning of TNG? The beginning of ENT? These were all watershed moments in the history of ST where the fans were split on the merits and downsides of the new offering. Does this time remind others of those times, or others?

Fans are always split. Sometimes the bashers are right (VOY, most of ENT) and sometimes they are wrong (DS9, Trek XI). Just goes to show, you can't trust those darn bashers! :rommie:

I'm not sure what it could be compared to. TMP's 1979 showing was sorta before my time, but I do vaguely recall the T0S film releases from the 80s, and ofcourse everything from the 90s onwards. Trek XI has an ambiance all its own, because of the reboot and the spectacular mainstream summer blockbuster success.

But I suppose it could be compared to the TNG era from season 3-7, because the vast majority of people seem to like or love Abram's Trek XI, (much as how it was when TNG was in first run) with a small minority casting their votes of discontent. I'm not sure the first season of TNG could be used since at that time it was such a radical concept to do Star Trek without Kirk and Spock and the episodes were so low end that it didn't gather much of a following.

DS9 had a reaction of "Hell yeah!! Another Trek series!!"

VOY had a reation of "Wow, they're having two Trek's on the air"

and the release of ENT had a reaction of "good Lord, are they really making another one!!?"

It definitely reminds me of the beginnings of TNG.

My circle of friends in High School were all HUGE trek fans. I was a freshman in college when TNG premiered and loved it.

Most of my friends HATED it, for a variety of reasons I thought were petty.

One even said he stopped watching at "where no ONE has gone before".

Meet the new "nuTrek", same as the old "nuTrek".

yep, TNG. I confess to having reservations about that, too. until around the beginning of the third season. everybody watched it. it had HUGE viewership. let's face it, it brought Trek the respect it had previously lacked.

Patrick Stewart.

nuff said.

I would tell you what the split in the fanbase and the strident attitudes of the minority portion of it reminds me of, but a mod has already asked me not to bring up American politics in the forum...

So ironic that 20 years later after 4 TNG flicks and 3 other TV shows, Trek came full circle back to TOS as the new Trek (or "nuTrek"). What was once old is now fresh and new again.

Back in 1989 TNG seemed so correct and so right, it was completely modern and reflected more present day sensibilities (although at times in over the top touchy feely ways) of the late 80s and early 90s compared to the outdated, hamfisted 1966 take of TOS. You add in how TFF bombed with critics and box office receipts in '89 and at the time Kirk and Spock seemed as current to Trek as Adam West was to the Batman franchise.

For myself, I'm old enough to have been through TWO trek "revivals".

I remember the reaction my friends and I had when we heard about ST: The Motion Picture, which we learned of through ads on the back cover of Uncanny X-Men Comics.

We were STOKED. We'd been watching those same episodes and reading the novelizations and thought that was it.

On the other hand, though I watched TNG, many of those same friends hated it, and even I had reservatons about the show in its early days. TNG Seasons 1-2 were way too preachy for me.

And uh, Wesley Crusher and Tasha Yar were *not* the best characters in the history of trek imo.

But then Wesley got turned into a real character (as opposed to WESLEY CRUSHER BOY GENIUS), Tasha died and Worf really came into his own and Q threw the ship to the wolves (aka the Borg) and everything was ok.

Agreed with what some of the other folks have said: TNG. Personally, I was ecstatic. I was only 7 when it aired, but had already been a huge Trek fan (thanks Mom!) since I was 4. I accepted it. When I got a little older, I found out none of my friends liked the new Star Trek. They were mad because Spock was gone, Scotty was gone, there was no Captain Kirk, and it all felt wrong. So no, nothing changes. ;)
