What Does CBS All Access Have to Offer Besides Star Trek?

No it won't be "lucky". It'll be a very dedicated effort to give it a good budget (probably larger than Supergirl) and most likely a much more expansive production effort.

RAMA

First off, Supergirl is awesome, and Star Trek will be lucky to have its caliber of production values and visual effects. Second, CBS is also the home of Person of Interest, which has become the smartest and most compelling hard science fiction narrative on network television, and Elementary, one of TV's smartest and best-written procedurals. Of course not every show on a network is going to be equal in quality, so it makes no sense to generalize.

And Meyer isn't strictly on the writing staff, I think. His credit is consulting producer, which this site defines thusly:

So if Bryan Fuller is Captain Picard and Alex Kurtzman is Admiral Nechayev, Meyer would be, ohh, Guinan -- the experienced elder who's along for the ride and advises the captain but isn't part of the command crew.

I hardly watch prime time TV shows anymore, so for me, I wouldn't need All Access for any other show. Unless I want to watch old episodes from The Bold and the Beautiful from 2013 but...no. That was a horrible year for that show.

The comedies? I'd say don't make me laugh, but it wouldn't be ironic cuz I don't .

I wasn't in the crime dramas even before they became passé and took up 90 percent of CBS's lineup.

So I'm fine with waiting till all 13 episodes are up and pay for exactly one month of service. Then buy the season once it's available on Google Play or Amazon.

Pretty sure they will have other new shows on CBSAA in 2017, along with a big site redesign.

Would you hold out until they have a free service with commercials (just like TV), and eliminate commercials for paid subscriptions with a flat rate instead of a tiered system?

I would only use it for a flat rate with no commercials. I wouldn't watch it for free if it had commercials.

I'll subscribe to all access for Star Trek alone. I really want to watch it.

Unless Amazon has a season pass available that'll cost less and still let me watch the episodes within 24 hours of release.

How much are you enjoying the commercials? Is there a tier without commercials yet?

For the monthly subscription amount, and that I have access to a lot of series I love, to me it's worth putting up with a few commercials. I guess that's the trade off for having a $5.99/mo. fee instead of higher.

I haven't had to watch commercials even on cable in over 10 years (DVR). Can't go back to that now, it's unbearable.

If you didn't cut the cord, you can get 99% of the same stuff with your provider's On Demand as CBSAA. They'd have to offer A LOT more exclusive shows.

And I think CBS is counting on that and will probably unveil in January 2017 an ad-free option that will cost closer to $11./month.

‘Big Brother’ Digital Edition Officially Coming To CBS All Access This Fall
"A premiere date will be announced at a later date."
with this new digital edition we will explore ways to reimagine this format for multiplatform audiences.”
"The digital Big Brother is the third original series to be announced and first to premiere on CBS All Access, alongside Star Trek: Discovery, set to bow in January, and The Good Wife, slated for spring 2017."

so technically it would be their first exclusive series on CBSAA and they would get lots of metrics even from a totally different audience than star trek has. A reality show audience who has watched years of Big Brother. So not an "original series" but will allow them to test the water and marketing to get subscriptions from a fanbase of a series before their big push after Jan.2, 2017 and also a new user interface and technology like Dolby Digital AC-3 5.1 surround sound in their apps getting an update long before January.
Back in 2014 when they launched
“December is a key month for our push,” said Marc DeBevoise, executive vice president, entertainment, sports and news, at CBS Interactive, in an interview. “It’s the time when the network has ended the first half of the season and goes into repeats and Christmas specials for a few weeks, then comes back in early January. It’s a unique time period and we are going to present something that’s very timely around catching up on the first half of the season.”
The company isn’t relying on TV alone. CBS is crafting a multitude of advertisements that will run across its many digital properties. These enticements can appeal to a potential customer’s love of a specific program – say, “Star Trek” – or a particular media behavior, like streaming video on a mobile device. The pitches are likely to appear on properties owned by CBS Interactive as well as those that are part of CBS News and CBS Sports, as well as affiliated sites, said DeBevoise.
Whoa! Did he just say "a potential customer’s love of a specific program – say, “Star Trek” "? Yes this was foreshadowing back in November 2014 of potentially their plans for Star Trek Discovery exclusive on CBSAA...
People who run “hyper fan” sites are among those who might be offered “a bounty, or some fee” that could include a longer-than-usual free trial period for “All Access” or some sort of revenue based on new subscribers to the service.
Memory Alpha, Trekcore, , TrekBBS, or Trekmovie ads?
“It’s a broad campaign with very specific targeting inside of it,” the executive said. “You pick the right way to convert users to what we think is a product for ‘super-fans,’ or a premium product for people who really want CBS.”
CBS To Unleash Marketing Push Behind ‘All Access’ Subscription-Video Service

In July 2016 they said they had around 1 million subscribers @ $5.99/month. I think they want the subscriber #s but don't want people not signing up due to ads until January. They want a big bump in subscriptions for Star Trek Discovery right before the start between the CBS preview and the CBSAA series start.
I wouldn't be surprised if they raised the price to $6.99/month in April 2017 as soon as season 1 ends.

Even if it goes up a dollar in April 2017, I'm staying with it. I love what I get with the money I'm spending for it.

A couple weeks ago, I was in bed a couple days with a horrendous sinus infection, but had to have my laptop with me to answer work emails, do some quick issues for work, etc.

In that time, my main viewing was of shows from CBSAA. I got to watch a lot of TOS and Mission: Impossible. It was perfect since I didn't feel like getting up to round up some music to listen to or DVDs to watch, much less make tea or keep getting sinus meds to take.

I like that they will be working out the CBSAA teething problems with a viewership who are, ahem, less concerned with quality. :D

This is very appealing to me.

I was seriously thinking of signing up anyway to see Star Trek Discovery alone, but when I saw that I could watch classic CBS-owned shows as well as catch up on current ones I like, such as Elementary, I thought the value was there.

CBS’ plan is to premiere four new original series on All Access in the next year, then ramp up the programming slate in subsequent years.
-Marc DeBevoise, president of CBS Interactive on Aug.10

The plan is for the service’s original scripted series to air between 10-13 episodes in a season; the Good Wife spinoff will be 10 episodes, Star Trek – 13 episodes.
While CBS All Access’ first two scripted series continue existing series franchises, DeBevoise noted that there no plans for the platform to revive cancelled cult series like Jericho but to focus on big original concepts.

This is their public plans. We'll see how the Big Brother first original series goes and how it is different from linear CBS broadcast of the current show.

Meh, this series just isn't exciting to me. Star Trek may "belong" on TV, but nothing I've seen is making this look like anything other than a pretty fan film. A "prequel" in a time period unexplored helmed by people who had to do with some of Trek's most lackluster TV. Certainly nothing I've seen makes me want to shell out for a streaming service with ads (I didn't pay for Hulu for that reason). I'll let the pilot wow me when it airs on regular CBS. If it does, maybe I'll reconsider. But the idea of paying for an ad-based streaming service really defeats the purpose to me. And I watch NONE of the shows on CBS as it is, so nothing else on All Access will be watched by me.

"Cut the cord" is all well and good, but when you have to pay for a half dozen streaming services, it begins to approach the cost of one cable subscription that has 1000 channels. Untested Star Trek on TV isn;t enticing enough. The movies are currently struggling to make money again and part of me feels franchise fatigue is just a breath away from returning. I don't think we need more Trek to make people interested.

Huh? Sure, Bryan Fuller was on Voyager's staff, but that was 15-plus years ago in the early stages of his career, and he was low on the totem pole, without a lot of creative control over the show. Since then, he's created some of the most daring, innovative, quirky, boundary-pushing shows on television. He created Wonderfalls and Dead Like Me and Pushing Daisies. He was on staff for the only good season of Heroes and wrote its most admired episode. He's the man behind the critically acclaimed Hannibal and he's producing the much-anticipated adaptation of Neil Gaiman's American Gods.

And I don't know where you get "people" from. Most of the other producers that have been announced, other than Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, and Nicholas Meyer, are veterans of earlier Fuller shows like Pushing Daisies and Hannibal. The only other known staffer associated with prior Trek productions is Joe Menosky, who's only on board as a staff writer as far as we know.

I loved Dead Like Me. I wish it had gotten a few more seasons. That was just a wonderful show.

One movie every four years is obviously way overdoing it.
